The Texas Rangers have postponed seeking a warrant on manslaughter charges against a Dallas police officer who shot and killed a man, Dallas police said Saturday in a news release.
The decision comes one day after Dallas Police Chief Ulysha Renee Hall said police were pursing a manslaughter warrant against the unidentified white officer in a case she described as having "more questions than answers."
On Thursday, Hall said the officer shot the man after mistakenly entering his apartment at the complex where she also lived.
Botham Shem Jean, 26, a native of St. Lucia who worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Dallas, died at a hospital, police said.
In a statement Saturday, the police department said the Texas Rangers took over the investigation to "eliminate the appearance of any potential bias" and "they made the decision to postpone pursuing a warrant until they could follow up on information that they received from the interview with the officer.
"On behalf of the Dallas Police Department, we are continuing to pray for Mr. Jean's family, and ask that the community remain patient as this investigation is conducted," Hall said in the news release.

(14,962 posts)Saying "cops shot a man" makes it sound like it was in the line of duty, doesn't it? Which lends an air of authority to the action, since cops are agents of state-sanctioned violence while on duty. Makes it seem like it could have been unfortunate but necessary or inevitable. FUCK OFF, whoever wrote this headline.
Secondly, the media has been way too quick to declare that she mistook his apartment for her own. That may be what she told the other police. That may be what the police department told the media... But if the situation was reversed, and it was a black male civilian who had shot and killed a white female cop in her own apartment, DO YOU THINK THE MEDIA WOULD REPORT HIS EXCUSE AS THE "OFFICIAL" STORY WITHOUT CAVEAT OR QUESTION?

(297,180 posts)Alyssa Kinsey, Jeans next-door neighbor who was so close she shared a wall with him, wrote on Facebook, This happened in the apartment next to me, to my very kind and friendly neighbor. I am absolutely heartbroken. Please, please keep his family in your prayers and send love and light their way. I cannot even begin to imagine the pain they are in. She shared a GoFundMe page for Jeans family. It reads, We are mourning the loss of our brother Botham Jean. He was a great Christian example and an inspiration to us all. We are asking for donations to cover funeral arrangements, his familys travel expenses, and anything else they may encounter. He will be missed.
In the interview with Heavy, Kinsey said, I was talking to my boyfriend, heard a shot, then some sort of commotion. Sounded like yelling/running/some loudness so I jumped up, ran to the door, looked out the peep hole, didnt see anything at that moment but I could hear a woman calling 911 and hyperventilating
