"Saturday's US Open women's final went to Naomi Osaka, who became the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam event. However, the result was overshadowed by a controversial dispute between Serena Williams and chair umpire Carlos Ramos during the second set at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
On Sunday, Williams was fined $17,000 for her role in the incident."

(6,930 posts)Nick Kyrigos intentionally started losing a match, and the umpire climbed down and gave him a little pep talk about how he was so important to the game.
Intentional tanking, or "lack of best efforts" is against the rules. Kyrigos has been fined for it in the past.
I probably don't disagree with the fine, but I also have a lot of sympathy for Serena Williams. She has blazed trails for women, blacks and athletes of all stripe, and she has done it in the face of hideous racism, sexism, body shaming, and all other kinds of insults.

(4,429 posts)She was accused of having her team coach her.
They were. (her coach admitted it).
He coached her throughout the game (he said so).
So, she called the ump a liar and a thief. But, as it turns out, she was wrong.
She should apologize and say she was wrong.
The fine is appropriate.
