General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI was in the hospital for an angiogram on Friday (not health related)
As I'm recovering, I had to spend several hours in a shared room with other patients.
Two beds down, someone is blasting Fox News at full volume.
I tried to ignore it, but it really got on my nerves.
I finally had my husband get my TV so I could blast MSNBC at full volume (which I did).
I didn't really want to, I wanted to rest and sleep more than anything else.
The disheartening part of all of it was that my TV was pre-tuned to Fox News!
I live in a really red area, *sigh*.
The whole thing was a sad reminder of just how pervasive Fox News is in Red areas.
I don't know how the nurses can stand having to listen to that crap. I'd go nuts, bananas, crackers.
Maybe they are of like mind and that is how they can tolerate it?
The other thing I'd say, this is a room for temporary stays. A few hours at most.
Why do the patients even need to have TVs?
Seems kind of rude to have a set up where other patients are forced to listen to a TV when they might not want to.
Oh well......
Ohiogal
(31,979 posts)And to have the TVs pre-tuned to Faux! That borders on torture!
Why do we also need TVs in patient waiting rooms? I always bring a book when I go to a doctor's office. Whatever happened to reading to pass the time in a waiting room?
They also put TVs in the grocery store where I shop so you can have something to watch while you stand in line. Thank goodess they always have them tuned to the Food Channel.
I see more and more TVs in restaurants, not just bars. I find it annoying and invasive.

(27,101 posts)I mean, even at the gas pump, although what they broadcast is pretty innocuous and mostly ads.
I usually try to clean my windows while filling up, myself.
Were there people clamoring for something to distract themselves while filling their tanks for 60 seconds?

(20,971 posts)at least here, most teevees have HGTV on, not teevee gnewz.

(34,136 posts)The TV in the waiting room for patients was tuned to the Food Channel. I complained since I considered that was cruel for people who had been told not to eat for at least twelve hours!
The next time when I went in for surgery a month later the same TV was tuned to HGTV so we got to watch tours of houses being sold. I'm not sure that was an improvement.
I did like having the TV there no matter what was on since it distracted from my worries about my upcoming procedure. I could not concentrate on reading so mindless pablum was all I could handle.

(13,891 posts)Just to babysit the patients and not bother the nurses. They are everywhere in hospitals... Thank god not in the OR suits!!! About the noise, next time you can request the nurse turn down the volume of the offending set... Happens all the time...

(16,377 posts)Checking people in for their imaging studies, what's starting to drive me nuts is people listening to their electronic devices w/o headphones or earbuds. They turn the sound up so they can listen to their sports game, music, etc. I think it's rude in a waiting room. Use your headphones for heaven's sake. The other night I had three different family members waiting for their loved ones listening to three different devices and I couldn't concentrate on my paperwork. If I can tell it bothers the other people waiting, I will ask people to turn down their devices, but why don't they use earbuds to begin with?
Nay
(12,051 posts)people who listen to crap on their devices without earbuds should be taken out and shot. In what scenario is this EVER acceptable in polite society?
Eh, I just figured out the problem -- this isn't a polite society anymore, and hasn't been for quite a while.

(16,377 posts)I've accepted the fact that we now live in a world where people (not me) think it's ok to have private conversations in front of q public audience, but how about keeping it short and speak softly. People tend to talk louder than usual on any phone and with cells they downright yell. The other day I had a family member in the waiting room killing time while waiting for their wife to have two MRIs with contrast. He hollered into his phone in the waiting room for almost an hour. It annoyed absolutely everyone and me especially. Arrrrgh!
PoindexterOglethorpe
(25,845 posts)Even the cooking channel shouldn't be blasting at full volume.
More to the point, why in earth does anyone think it's necessary, let alone desirable, to have TVs in recovery rooms? Or doctors offices? Or any other waiting rooms at all?
It is genuinely frightening that the vast majority of people seem completely unable to sit quietly perhaps read a magazine or a book, or talk with someone. Nope. TV TV TV. All the time TV. Heaven forbid that there not be one available at all times. It doesn't matter what it's tuned to. It's clearly a complete abdication of thinking. I don't care what you're watching at the time. You really can spend some time without the TV on.
Coventina
(27,101 posts)I suppose the remedy is to just wear headphones everywhere, so you don't have to listen to what's being forced on you.
But that's a pretty sad commentary as well.

(25,845 posts)Among the reasons I carry a purse (I'm a woman, despite the screen name) is that I always have a book, sometimes two in it. Two very specific times in my life I was stranded without a book to read, and that will never happen again, if I have any control over it.
I appreciate that a lot of people prefer to read electronically. That's not the point. It's the being forced to listen to someone else's idea of entertainment or news.
Heck, it's why I think open floor plan homes are a bad idea. If the TV is on, everyone must listen/watch whatever is on. The alternative, every family member alone in their own room is just as bad. What ever happened to playing board games? Discussing books or ideas or doing some kind of craft?
Coventina
(27,101 posts)I am so sick of the "open floor plan"!!
Maybe because I'm a natural introvert, but I LIKE the ability to be alone in my own space!

(20,971 posts)HGTV + property bros drive me up the wall. STOP PAINTING OLD WOODWORK!!!! WHITE IS ANTISEPTIC + stainless is so fucking trendy + lameass. sheeple is soooo true. THERE IS NO MODERN!!! its dated the minute you finish it. tho, i do think most 70's/80's is dreck. design history is a CURSE today.
but then, the stupids can buy the new stuff + i find QUALITY old stuff at estate sales.

(4,341 posts)You can make your point without the cursing, and what you may not like, other people do like, that is why most democrats are liberals, they accept other people's views without upsetting themselves much, we may not agree, but that doesn't make them stupid...of course that exceptions apply, but nonetheless, everyone is entitled to their opinion as long as there is a solid base to support it.
Open spaces do have their advantages, for one, most houses are very small today so the open space eliminates claustrophobia, you still have the bedrooms and other areas where you can have your privacy, the open space usually entails the living room, the kitchen, the dining room, and that is it.
I have seen small houses transformed for the better when walls have been brought down and the space is opened up, not only do they look beautiful, but for people who like to entertain, it is fantastic, and they still have their privacy in their bedrooms, study rooms, etc.
Those you call stupid could also say "the stupid can buy the close space, and old stuff", and that would not be right either.

(20,971 posts)do it to a meh cape cod. or a ranch house. painted woodwork WHITE drives me up the walls. white on white on white. BORING. i guess i appreciate old stuff. why use wood IF YOU CAN'T SEE IT!

(26,324 posts)I know I know. I kinda hate myself.
When I installed all this oak 15 years ago I thought it was sacrilege to paint wood trim. In fact I tore out a whole house full of painted trim - it was checked and chipped and painted over with bad paint jobs. I really spent a lot of time deciding to refinish or go with new. I tore it all out and spent thousand on oak trim. I even re-did some of it along the way to make it more period with proper toppers and crown
But now Im selling and thats what everyone wants. White trim , gray walls and dark floors.
The next project I may do stained wood again. My biggest beef with my current trim is it oranged over time. I used an oil based poly that aged orange. also, I did a natural stain. Next time Ill go a couple shades darker and use water based.
phylny
(8,379 posts)bought a house with stained trim and they dislike it. Might I ask your technique for doing this? They had a contractor quote $3500 to do it. I told them a slight (slight!) rough up on the wood, primer, and paint would do it.

(20,971 posts)i do the house sale listings for milw. OLD UNPAINTED GETS FAR MORE MONEY!!! shit. gorgeous victorian w/ tons of tile + stained glass + some idiots painted the woodwork and i am sure it lowered their sale bu 75k.
i do estate sales. one house they loved tuscan? colors. woodwork was painted COBALT, orange-yellow, gold + NOT WHITE WALLS + it looks nice. another sale opened my eyes. i always loved woodwork unpainted, but then i did a sale of a 20's bungalow w/ deep woodwork, the walls were deep sappfire, emerald green and the woodwork GLOWED, so when we painted over the godawful butter yellow in our 26' tudor, i did not get the 2nd palest green, i got the 3rd darkest + the woodwork looks great. then we did the hall. 1st a chartreuse, looked ok w/ the blond mid c maple on 2nd floor, looked horrid w/ 1st floor oak, so panic choice, went thru the greys and again i picked a deeper green/taupe w/ TEEVEE DESIGN came out as the new color. and we did the ceiling all the same taupe. we have too many details in this house. my uncle painted his house in a deeper purple taupe just sold his meh 80's house for HOW MUCH?!? REALLY??
don't get me started on white on white.

(175,731 posts)This takes between three and four hours. It's given in the same unit at the hospital where they do chemotherapy. Each double room, which until recently had hospital beds that have now been replaced by chairs, have televisions for each patient in there. I always watch my staple CNN and keep the sound as low as possible. If it's on a channel that I don't want, I keep searching until I find CNN. I like having backdrop noise and to keep up with the news' fast pace these days. I also have my laptop and a book for those occasions when the hospital's wifi is down.
No one has ever complained about the TV being too loud. Frankly, I like having it there, but I do realize that not all people do.
Coventina
(27,101 posts)Granted, that it was Fox News made it a "worst case scenario", but if it had been anything it would have been obnoxious at that volume.
I'm sure you playing CNN very quietly is not disturbing anyone.

(38,310 posts)Nurse, nurse! My TV keeps turning off!
Or you could invite one of my brothers to visit. They're big guys who ride motorcycles.
"Hey, you, why are you watching that shit? You're disturbing my sister. Here, let me turn it off for you."
Reaches up, unplugs television, tosses cord over top where nobody can reach it.
If hospitals have televisions in shared rooms they should require viewers use headphones. Hell, it could be a money-making opportunity for them, like five dollar Tylenol capsules: Special hospital certified headphones, one hundred dollars a night.

Did you ever move when your area flip from blue to red?
Moving costs both time and money. There are plenty of other considerations that the OP might have that could prevent them from moving such as proximity to relatives, yet you come up with such an asinine question for your first post.
Enjoy your brief stay.
