J.K. Rowling has come out in support of Serena Williams after was depicted in a newspaper cartoon that has been labelled by some as racist.
It was only revealed yesterday the tennis star will have to pay $17,000 for three code violations made during a US Open match.
The referees office decided to fine Williams $10,000 for verbal abuse against chair umpire Carlos Ramos, $4,000 for being warned for coaching and a further $3,000 for breaking her racket.
She had clashed with Ramos after she was issued a code violation warning in the second sets second game for receiving coaching.
Now, her argument with the umpire has been parodied by the Herald Suns Mark Knight who hasnt painted Williams in the most positive light. Its kinda my job to stay on the fence about these things but this does scream Jim Crow doesnt it?

(128,441 posts)The very best of the best of our politicians, educators, entertainers, and athletes. It's been going on for well over a century in U.S. media. It is stomped into the heart and soul of "America".
The Ozzies have always had their own issues as well. But at least it is still heartening to watch much of what Murdoch once owned and controlled, disappear from his clutches.

(82,849 posts)I was concerned that the sexism and the racism might slide by in all the hubbub. But there's no denying it in the wake of Mark Knight's cartoon. So thanks, Mr. Knight, for parading your bigotry for all to see and providing a sterling example of deplorable behavior.
