Bellevue landlord to pay $76,516 to military members charged fees for breaking lease when deployed
By Nancy Gaarder
A Bellevue apartment complex will pay $76,516 in damages to 65 military service members to settle allegations that the company wrongly charged them a rental termination fee when they were deployed.
Federal law allows service members to terminate a lease if they've received military orders to move to another base or when they go on deployment for at least 90 days.
A lawsuit filed by the federal government alleges that the Pavilion at Twin Creek violated federal law when it charged the service members between $78 and $1,498 to terminate their leases.
The apartments are located at 4007 Raynor Parkway near Offutt Air Force Base. The ownership is headquartered in Indiana, according to court documents. As part of the settlement, Twin Creek LLC did not admit wrongdoing, and the federal government did not find any wrongdoing.
