(22,113 posts)I wish success for this venture.
However, beware of the Koch brothers and other billionaires, as well as Paul Ryan, who has some bizarre ideas about how the economy should run, based upon his Ann Rand fixation (he probably goes to bed every night fantasizing the things he would do).
It's a shame that others would dispute the desire to help others. Are we not a Christian nation?
Repugs used to claim this label, but no more.
The label I would attach to republicans is predatory capitalists. When is enough, enough?

(391 posts)... I hope they extend a loud and very public invitation to their "friends across the aisle"
to join in this worthwhile effort.
That way old white guys, like me, can see who's got their back.(Sometimes I crack myself up)

(31,386 posts)Democrats unite to expand Social Security
BY NANCY ALTMAN AND ALEX LAWSON, OPINION CONTRIBUTORS 09/13/18 11:30 AM EDT
Excerpts:
The formation of the Expand Social Security Caucus is the perfect response to Trumps lies. By making it clear that the Democratic Party is united around expanding, not cutting, Social Securitys modest benefits, it exposes the utter absurdity of Trumps claims.
The Expand Social Security Caucus highlights the stark contrast between the parties, and makes it clear that Social Security is on the ballot this November. If Republicans retain control of both Houses of Congress, they will be emboldened to push hard in 2019 for the Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid cuts in their budget. And that will be only the beginning. Their ultimate goal is to utterly destroy all three programs in service of their anti-government ideology.
If Democrats take control of the House, the exact opposite will happen. Rep. Larson, who will become chair of the Social Security Subcommittee of the Ways and Means Committee, will hold hearings on expanding Social Security, followed by committee and floor votes. Republicans, including Donald Trump, will face a choice between going along with the expansion legislation or opposing the will of the overwhelming majority of the American people.
Once the goal of the newly formed Expand Social Security Caucus is realized and benefits are increased, Social Security will once again recede from the headlines. But this time, it will be for the right reason: Not because of a disgraceful circus of corruption in the White House, but because Social Security once again provides not only cash benefits but the intangible benefit of security, peace of mind.

(51,585 posts)The Dems are smart and doing it now is good timing...make a distinction for the midterms between the two parties policies/agendas.

(28,979 posts)Trump claimed in a speech last week that Democrats would take away our Social Security and Medicare. This is a perfect response. Let Republicans own whatever evil designs they have. Even the deaf 55% of seniors who are voting for Trump will have to listen if the noise gets loud enough.
About time our side tried being a bit strategic. Also, I hope seniors do get a substantial COLA raise out of the deal. Protect SS and Medicare for All Americans!

IT SHOULD ALREADY BE DONE.
Not hoping we'll somehow get to it someday IF the Democrats get control of both houses of congress and aren't sabotaged again, IF we can force Trump to sign, IF, IF, IF there's money in the national pot after the Republicans have sent it all to the ultrawealthy people they serve to make sure we can't.
We SHOULD be embarking on the next stage. Hillary intended to move to a universal basic income as soon as possible. She knew we're going to have to and can because we're an extremely wealthy nation but need to redistribute our wealth. Where's THAT? Distributed UP by the Republicans!
What are the 3% of all workers whose jobs are nothing BUT driving going to be doing 4 years from now? And the other nearly 30% of jobs that shrink because driving is no longer required? Go on "expanded Social Security" at 30 because they're destitute?
We SHOULD already be training hundreds of thousands of people for the good-paying new jobs that will be available. And doing hundreds of other things. State colleges people can just write checks for. $15 minimum wage.
IT SHOULD ALL ALREADY BE HAPPENING.
Here's a picture for this gallery: America's first woman president, elected by intelligent, responsible Americans but not sworn in, sabotaged by people who are insisting they wanted an expansion to Social Security. And with her, of course, both houses of congress were also sabotaged.
Were they stupid or what?
