"I'm going to protect my property"

From what, you fucking moron? Are you going to hold the wind back? Are you going to stem the tide? Are you going to wish away the 13 foot storm surge?

How fucking dumb are you?

And how dare you do this with your little children there? LITTLE CHILDREN. Trusting in you as the parent? You belong in Hell.

context: some dumb fuck woman and her dumber fuck husband on TV, with their kids, in front of their modest little house that is likely worth less than the amount for which it is insured.

The wind speed is decreasing because of eyewall replacement cycles. Those take energy from wind speed and use it to expand the radius of the wind field, so instead of 140 MPH winds out to 40 miles from the center, you get 100 MPH winds out 80 miles. While this is marginally better for ripping your roof off it is WORSE for both storm surge and rainfall, as it expands the area of sea being swept by the windfield and saturated with moisture. Katrina was similar in that it was "only" cat 3 when it hit, having weakened, but the storm surge was more typical of a cat 5 -- and over a far larger area than most cat 5's manage to cover.

they really should evacuate. But if not, most people who have survived these storms can handle it, and they may be more worried about looters. I have lived through a number of bad hurricanes, and while 99.9% of the people pull together and help one another out, you do have some low life’s who will take advantage of others at their most vulnerable. We had a neighbor with serious medical conditions who evacuated prior to Hurricane Frances in 2004, and came home after the initial danger passed. A couple days later some scumbag stole his generator which was his only source of electricity (we lost power for nearly a month!). I had a small generator that I used to run my well that I gave him (and secured it with cables and locks). So yes, I get it. And I don’t automatically hold it against them without knowing their situation.

Risking the lives of small kids when there could be a strong surge and flooding makes no sense.

You laugh, but people have actually done that. Besides, everyone knows that a gun is protection against everything.

I have been through multiple Hurricanes. Expect to go through more. Every persons situation is different.

What do we know about their house? Surge zone? Flood zone? Elevation? When was it built? All these things matter.

If they are on a barrier island or flood zone then you are correct, they are idiots. But this is a weak cat 2 storm. Any decent home will be relatively unscathed by winds.

I went through Charlie in a 70 year old bungalow. 100+ mile an hour winds. No damage. The house was built like Fort Knox. All thick yellow pine and hell, even the roof planks were 1x 8’s. I am sure if interviewed people on DU would have called me a redneck with a shitty house. Last year we got hit by Irma. 80 mile an hour winds and lost 50% of our shingles in a 2500 square house built in the 90s with a pre-2004 code roof. My new roof can take 140mph.

I am retiring in a panhandle lot 400 yards from a coastal creek. Homes on the creek will flood in a hurricane. Our lot is on a 50 foot bluff and will not flood. The mansions on the barrier islands that protect the town I will live in? They will be at surge risk. Cat 4 storm? Leave fast!

These people will probably be fine.

The TV people make all these storms seem like Camille, which is the first storm I lived through.

Anyone who has not lived through a hurricane should think twice before judging. Hell, you won’t see me comment on proper Blizzard behavior. Never seen one.
