Back in a previous life when I joined DU, the term "troll" probably didn't even exist. (Except for those ogre type creatures that lived under bridges.)
I remember that when i posted something controversial, there were those who didn't just disagree, but went into full attack mode. And that, of course, pissed me off, and I'd respond in kind.
It took me a year or two to decide to never respond to anyone I considered to be an asshole (which was, of course, a subjective opinion on my part). Nonetheless, I found that responding just led to a "Fuck you!"/"Fuck me? Fuck you!" exchange that ate up most of a thread and killed the issue under discussion.
Over time, I learned that not responding helped to keep the thread on track. Today, I see far too many threads that go off on a tangent because of responses to a troll who may have intentionally been trying to destroy a thread.
It's difficult to ignore responses to OPs that are outright attacks, or, more likely, troll bait to get you into an argument and destroy the topic of the original post.
Over 10 years ago, I made it a personal rule to never respond to those who were either intentionally seeking to disrupt a conversation, or those who were making outright fools of themselves.
Today, many threads can be shortened and kept on point by one simple self-imposed rule. Don't feed the trolls.

(1,109 posts)I feel you very well indeed. I seldom post anything anymore because if I present a strong view that avocates drawing a line in the sand that clearly delineates my (and hopefully OUR side vs the other sides view) I get a bunch of bunch of equivocating what about... HOW DARE YOU JUDGE THEM ALL bullshit. All I know is everyone should enjoy at least the same rights and privileges that as a poor working white male, I enjoy. It is simple to me.

(36,841 posts)They are usually the ones who have countless replies on almost every flaming thread (again, again and again... many for years).
DU is a far better place to visit without all their drama.

(1,109 posts)But I sometimes don't read responses. I just click on the yellow stuff to make it go away. I guess the trolls win that way. But I refuse to respond to folks who wish to quibble over semantics. Some are trump/Russian trolls, others are far left or puritists. I live in a big country. There is enough room to have your own opinions as long as you do not seek to forcefully compel others to your views.

(11,495 posts)I see way to many threads get hijacked by trolls. I will admit some of those trolls are good at pissing people off enough to derail the issue that is being discussed.

(638 posts)I recently learned about this issue the hard way. You can't reason with some people who are just looking for a fight. If the criticism isn't constructive just let it roll off your back like water off a duck.

(34,195 posts)Back in the day, before internet forums, there were the computer 'newsgroups'.
And there were trolls aplenty.
I too sometimes encounter folks on DU who seem to be here seeking to engage others into debates, arguments, etc.
If you say 'yes', they say 'no'. If you say 'up', they say 'down' ... and worse.
My remedy is the 'ignore' button.
And if there's a topic you don't like seeing used in frequent attacks, you can 'trash' it from your sight.

(6,390 posts)Trolls are also in Dungeons & Dragons and require fire or acid to destroy....
....when you think about it, online trolls require the same.
