That was about what I guessed the outcome would be. I didn't say so, because I'm not in New York, but it seemed clear to me that Cynthia Nixon didn't really have a chance.

In the NY Attorney General race, Letitia James won by about 10 percentage points over Zephyr Teachout, as well.
In statewide races, it appears that voters are selecting more established candidates, rather than progressive challengers.

(58,601 posts)I'm really selective when it comes to backing celebrity candidates. Some, you can see they actually have chops and looks like they can do the job. Many, they're just on another publicity campaign. Trump is a fine example of the latter.

(43,049 posts)I've said I hate thought of protest votes-- it diminishes the concept of voting and can lead to some really nasty results (like when you vote for Trump because you don't really like Hillary, and think he has no chance...)
And I do hate them. This is the first time I did it, and it was purely an emotional outburst. It won't happen again.
Cuomo won, and that's all that counts to a politician. He won't sit back and ponder why a third of the voters rejected him. That doesn't count-- he won and that's all that counts.
How many other protest votes were there? I have no idea, but I'm sure there were a lot of them. My other votes were simply for who I thought would do the best job. Some won, some lost, and on to the general.

(146,255 posts)It seemed clear that she had almost no chance, though. The voters speak and the winner advances. That's the system.
I don't do protest voting, though. It serves no useful end, it seems to me. I also don't do protest non-voting in General Elections. That always ends badly. Primaries are where we select our candidates. In the GE, we select our public servants. The choice then truly can make an enormous difference, as we all should have learned in 2016, I think.

Many of those supporters either new to the process or tentative voters drawn to our primary by these impressive candiates.
Hope the Cuomo campaign can reach out, capture, and hold these voters for the November and beyond. Lots of energy, enthusiasm, youth, and diversity there.

(146,255 posts)I hope everyone who turned out does so again in November. Getting in the habit of voting is a good, good thing.

(94,352 posts)Tish James is a fairly uninspiring NY politician, who is not expected to challenge the bi-partisan culture of corruption in Albany, and will in all likelihood dump the AG job in four years to run for Gov.
