When people believe in someone to that extent, there is a simple explanation, as there always is: Websters Dictionary.

This is not new. It's called irrational thought, part of cult follower's misplaced or excessive admiration placed upon one person. It's a symptom of a cult belief system.

cult
/kəlt/
* a system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object.
* a relatively small group of people having religious beliefs or practices regarded by others as strange or sinister.
* a misplaced or excessive admiration for a particular person or thing.
