But Kavanaugh was selected not because of his conservative judicial positions but because of his extreme views on the power of the executive. His notion that sitting presidents can't be investigated or subpoenaed, let alone indicted, is so far out of even the conservative mainstream that he might be difficult to replace.

(I say you must assume that the other four republicans would protect Trump because if that's not the case, then Kavanaugh's vote wouldn't create a majority to protect Trump).
