If Clinton wins (and IIRC, she didn’t promise not to replace Garland with another nominee) then they confirm Garland in a lame duck session for fear of getting someone they like less. That early on that Trump would win would be if the vote totals themselves were altered in many different states, and I haven’t seen any credible evidence that THAT happened. Hacking the dnc, running social media ads, even covertly funneling millions of dollars to help Trump aren’t sufficient to guarantee success.

In this case though, I thing McConnell was just being a weasel and trying to hedge his bet on a nominee. It was also probably a big factor that he could use this potential SC spot as a campaign issue to get out the vote.
