(14,959 posts)Certainly Kavanaugh and his friends know all kinds of embarrassing crap about her brother and maybe her as well.

(37,648 posts)I can't imagine any Republican standing in the way of their once-in-a-century far right autocratic in-the-bag Republican Justice added to the S.Ct. to make it majority Republican, with three far-right wingnuts. They have to. Otherwise, they'll be cut from committees, ostracized, and become powerless. The Senators don't work alone. They work in groups, and the biggest deal is to get on committees to work on specific bills and issues, and get pork for your state.
Only those who are leaving politics will be free to vote no. So that's Corker, Flake I think.

(13,920 posts)They are going to let it play just enough to try and provide a little cover with the voters.
But im pretty sure that even if Kavenaugh came into the hearing on Monday and chose a random woman in the chamber and repeated his assault in full view of every Republican senator there, they would still vote him onto the court. Unanimously.

(37,648 posts)They'd say Judge Kavanaugh was driven to act in a way totally out of character for him. After a life of being a prince, he should be forgiven for this one act that he was driven to by the shameful way the Democrats treated him. Never before have we seen such a fine man be treated so shamefully.

(82,849 posts)Judge Kavanaugh is being considered for just a Supreme Court position. If Franken hadn't resigned, he would have had to face the voters and be judged by them whether he was fit to continue as a Senator. If Kavanaugh is confirmed, he'll never be subject to review again, and will decide for himself if he should recuse himself from any particular case.
So, see, Franken's and Kavanaugh's positions are totally different, and disparate responses by Senator Murkowski are perfectly okay.

(37,648 posts)First, SHE made no "importance of office or job" distinction. Indeed, her point was that NO JOB OR POSITION can or should accept such behavior.
Second she accepted the allegations against Franken as TRUE, despite (1) no investigation; (2) no allegation of real assault or molestation being involved; (3) 4 of the accusers being anonymous; and (4) total and bold denial of Franken of all claims.
The two situations are IDENTICAL in every relevant way, as far as Murkowski's statements. Murkowski and other Republicans were chomping at the bit to get rid of Franken for other reasons.

(82,849 posts)Of course Judge Kavanaugh should be held at the very least to the standard Murkowski applied to Senator Franken. In fact, because a seat on the Supreme Court (nine of those) is arguably more important than a seat in the Senate (100 of those), it could be argued that Kavanaugh should be held to a higher standard. Also, because Senator is an elected position for a six-year term and federal judge is an appointed position for life, perhaps even more stringent standards and scrutiny should be applied to a nominee to the Supreme Court.
