On the anniversary of the 1881 death of POTUS James Garfield, a few relevant quotes

“I so despise a man who blows his own horn, that I go to the other extreme.”

“Now more than ever the people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless, and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness, and corruption.”

― James A. Garfield

He was an amazingly forward thinking man. Had he not been assassinated Jim Crow might well have died in the 1800s.

I think you are right about Jim Crow. Garfield made civil rights a major part of his platform.

I watched that too and the scholars thought Garfield would have been a great president.

“I so despise a man who blows his own horn, that I go to the other extreme.”

Nothing repulses me more than an arrogant braggart, especially when they have very little to brag about.
