Did the Senate ever say what their conclusion was of the hearings and why, after all of the information Anita Hill gave, that Clarence Thomas should still be voted through. Did they just say, "we don't believe her". Or did they even make a statement and just voted him through?

(130,864 posts)After extensive debate, the Committee sent the nomination to the full Senate without a recommendation either way.
The final floor vote was not strictly along party lines: 41 Republicans and 11 Democrats (Dixon (D-IL), Exon (D-NE), DeConcini (D-AZ), Robb (D-VA), Hollings (D-SC), Fowler (D-GA), Nunn (D-GA), Breaux (D-LA), Johnston (D-LA), Boren (D-OK), and Shelby (D-AL) now (R-AL)) voted to confirm while 46 Democrats and 2 Republicans (Jeffords (R-VT) later (I-VT) and Packwood (R-OR)) voted to reject the nomination; John Glenn was particularly vituperative in his rejection. Ironically Packwood himself would later be engulfed by sexual harassment allegations which ended his Senate career.

(16,369 posts)Many red state Dems voted for Thomas. Nunn, Boren, DeConcini knowing their states were drifting right. And Im sure bob packwood knew which way the political winds were blowing in Oregon when he voted no. You begin to see the emergence of the red state blue state landscape we know today in that vote.

(108,976 posts)He ended the hearings because he'd promised the GOP he'd end them by that date, and he wanted to honor his promise. Honoring his promise to them took priority over justice for her.
Then he called for a vote, and Clarence got approved.
That's why some of us will never hop on the Biden train. Though we'll probably allow it to drag us, if it ends up leaving the station.

(6,351 posts)By the time it was over, he was a 52-48 Justice. So she cost him 38 votes but I'm sure that was all planned out to give vulnerable senators cover and still push him through.
And - as someone said below, this is why I'm still uncomfortable with Joe. Love him but this was an irreparable error in judgement.

(2,795 posts)Biden just ended it and they said, "let's vote"? They never made a statement of "we don't find her accusations credible." or "we believe him more than her." Just went through the motions and voted?

(89,247 posts)Just by Anita Hill or was there a deep state back then before there was a deep state paying her? Because I'm seeing a lot of idiots talking about Blasey Ford being a paid liar.
