September 20, 2018 at 7:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard
In what Republicans believe is an increasingly unlikely scenario where Kavanaugh tanks, Dems believe they can juice turnout already hitting record levels by playing off the huge public attention to the court, and Roe v. Wade in particular.
They envision President Obama and Michelle Obama locking arms with the Clintons, the Bidens, and Democratic congressional leaders to crank up a presidential-election-sized campaign.

(58,785 posts)All the failures to divulge and deceptions by Justice Kavanaugh in the hearing and how he'll rule will be of compelling interest as the new SCOTUS term begins. Some of the records still hidden now will probably leak.
And of course all those credible accusations of highly unethical behaviors and also genuinely criminal actions in his work for the White House and Republicans still need to be discussed. Also that the Republicans betrayed their duty by refusing to investigate them during the confirmation period.
And, of course, there would be no closure for the attempted rape accusation, but very possibly new evidence surfacing in support as the press and perhaps private investigators continue to interview and report what people say.

(22,776 posts)worse than if he falls. Independents, women, and all thinking people would have been witness to the naked use off raw power to force through the confirmation of a lying criminal to the court.

(25,237 posts)Either way - confirmation or withdrawal of Kavanaugh - the Dems need to make the midterms on these issues. Dems need to point out how the Repugs railroaded this whole situation - all the way back to sandbagging Merrick Garland until now - and point out to the American People the consequences of not taking back Congress in the Midterms. Losing on the Women's Issues is just part of the undoing of our democracy that we've been experiencing.
That's why when I read the title of this OP I was suspect as to what the intention of this article is. It almost sounds counter-intuitive as to what the Dems should do. Not rub it in the face of the Repugs that they failed on Kavanaugh because to me that might rev up more Repug support for the Midterms.
The Dems need to point out the insidiousness of the Repugs moves and say we need to take back Congress in order to make sure that we can take back our democracy from the brink of what Trump has brought to us.

(10,437 posts)this weekend to tell America her side....the GOP will hit democrats over the head with this. Ford has to speak to the american people so we have a sense of her veracity.

And men just have to sit there and say, "She's a liar."

(2,647 posts)All the republican men will call her a liar anyway, whether she speaks the truth or not. And they don't care what the American public wants, either.
It goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway, grassley and hatch are blatant hypocrites..............and proud of it.
The FBI should investigate her allegation, but the republicans don't want them to. What have they got to hide?

(32,613 posts)... who said that women are sometimes treated unfairly by the media, and why should Dr. Ford be expected to appear on TV. I was pointing out that it could work in her favor if she did that. Not sure why you're jumping in here, but maybe I missed something?

(5,554 posts)The 11th hour nature of this ups the bar on what is needed for credibility. If the tables were turned, and a last minute accuser came forward against a progressive nominee, we'd be skeptical too.
I really really really really wish this was made public as soon as Kavanaugh's name was announced. Yes, waiting took time off the clock (which is very valuable in its own right) but it makes more like a political ploy than an attempt at justice

You always respect the wishes of the victim. The Washington Post is the one who outed her.

(6,227 posts)if Ford doesn't appear, her lawyer should. Not only that tons of women from her high school should be sitting in the seats behind her lawyer. The visual will be amazing.

(6,227 posts)I see the Dems in full court press every day. If folks have ideas they should be telling the Dems.

(37,158 posts)Republicans have suppressed documents, and even before the attempted rape allegations surfaced there was clear evidence he committed perjury in testimony to congress. During the 90s he selectively (and illegally) leaked information from Starr's office to the press and Paula Jones' lawyers. He's been vague and evasive to any non-softball question.
If they still push past opposition to get what they want --a political operative on the court (or, more accurately, another one) -- all of those things are even more in jeopardy.

(10,476 posts)If he sails through on a party-line vote, the GOP still gets blasted...100% rightfully...as misogynist, woman-hating clods.
If the nomination sinks, it will be made clear to the voters that the GOP are still misogynist, woman-hating clods for pushing this flawed candidate so hard. Kavanugh sinking will be our doing, not theirs.
