It’s U.S. versus them.

On a phone call shortly after Donald Trump took office, Vladimir Putin told the President it wasn’t their fault they couldn’t cultivate a close relationship. On the contrary, the Russian leader said, their otherwise congenial potential was being undercut by a covert “deep state” cabal within the U.S. government.

“It’s not us. We get it,” Putin told Trump, according to an excerpt of Washington Post reporter Greg Miller’s forthcoming book. “It’s the subordinates fighting against our friendship.”

Putin’s comments evoke a dubious conspiracy theory swirling about certain Republican circles claiming with scant evidence that there’s an administration-wide plot to undermine Trump’s presidency.

Miller’s book, “The Apprentice: Trump, Russia and the Subversion of American Democracy,” hits shelves Oct. 2 and is expected to take a deep dive into Trump’s curious ties to Russia and the Kremlin’s multifaceted interference in the 2016 election.
