by Joseph A. Wulfsohn | Sep 21st, 2018, 11:11 pm
On Friday night, liberal documentary filmmaker Michael Moore criticized former President Barack Obama for actions he made during the 2016 election.
Promoting his new film Fahrenheit 11/9, Moore began by pointing out how Hillary Clinton lost his home state of Michigan by about two votes per precinct and that she never should have lost a blue state. He added that the people of Flint felt they were used as props after it was learned that Clinton received debate questions in advance during the primaries and not Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
Moore also noted that more people voted in the April primary in Michigan than did in the general election.
He then sadly pivoted to President Obama, who he previously noted was the greatest president of his lifetime.
In the film, I show something that sadly President Obama did by coming to Flint and telling the people the water was okay. It was still poison, Moore told Bill Maher. And then he pretended to drink from a glass of water and then said that it wasnt a stunt. And it was. And it just put a knife in the heart of so many people in Flint who were hoping he would come with the Army Corps of Engineers, dig up these poison pipes, and replace the pipes in the city. And he didnt do that. And then people gave up and a lot of people stayed home. They didnt vote for Trump, but they just stayed home.

(3,430 posts)...a check for millions to support Dems in these midterms.
So there is a difference.
Trumpocalypse
(6,143 posts)And as much as a million dollars helps, his constant slamming of the party does far more damage.
Separation
(1,975 posts)Especially when directed inwards. What separates Maher, is he puts his money where his mouth is. He also just doesn't complain about something, he will give advice or allow his guests to say how something could be changed. That's why I like Maher, even though he has his own faults...just like the democratic party...and even myself.
Trumpocalypse
(6,143 posts)His attacks on Dems hurt the party. That only encourages some people to stay home. Remember he supported Nader in 2000 because Gore was pure enough on environmental issues.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)The republican leaders in Michigan were doing nothing about Flint's water. The people were looking to President Obama for help. If President Obama did nothing more than what Snyder did (drink from a proven "safe" faucet and take a gallon on water "home" with him, then the tactic was a mistake. Our politicians should be people that gather facts, then step in forcefully to right wrongs. So, I agree with Moore's sentiment on this.
Trumpocalypse
(6,143 posts)You're right. But I wasn't referring to that. I was referring to his and Maher's more general and frequent slamming of the party. Remember, these are two people who were big Nader supporters in 2000 because Al Gore wasn't pure enough for them.

(92,155 posts)you said a vote for Gore is a vote for bush. You, Sarandon, Nader, and the rest of the assholes who have been doing your damnedest to setup false equivalencies between Democrats and republicans, and it never fails, you always come out of your holes right before an election
"Those damn establishment Democrats."
Will stick this up your stupid fat ass moore. look at the Supreme Court appointments made by DEMOCRATS verses republicans.
Who was the President that appointed Justice Ginsberg again? Who was the party that gave us the Civil Rights Act, the voting rights Act, Lilly Ledbetter Act, the Iran nuclear deal, prevented the collapse of the American car market, etc. etc. etc.
The Presidents behind that just happened to be establishment Democrats.
Of course the asshole will get a lot of attention because he is bashing Democrats, all to promote his movie probably so he can generate enough revenue to pay for the messy divorce he is going through now. Is that Obama's fault too Moore?
Perhaps the local and state officials are where you should start looking, and who elected those folks?

(58,785 posts)This man uses his "rumpled working man schtick" to persuade the real thing that there was no difference between Gore and W, that America would be worse off now under Hillary than under Trump!
He's worse than insane because he can sell this trash to weak minds.
We know this man's manipulations threw Florida and thus the nation to the Republicans in 2000, but that didn't halt his battle to enable the forces he purports to fight one bit. Everything that's happened since is really our fault. As he says, Democrats caused the election of Trump.
He's one of a peculiar type who both identifies left and consistently attacks left. Fuck him and the bizarre and destructive hypocrisy he rides.

(58,785 posts)state of emergency over lead in the drinking water and on that visit (of the POTUS to a small city in Michigan!) recommended that all children be tested for lead poisoning. AND he said that with the recommended filtration systems installed (ONLY with those) the water was safe to drink.
"If youre using a filter, if youre installing it, then Flint water at this point is drinkable."
This is yet another example of what that political psychologist meant when he joked that the difference between right and left wing extremists is that left wingers hate themselves while right wingers hate everyone else.
Michael Moore types have this fixation on attacking inward which doesn't allow them to look out, even when the danger is severe. Their response to the Republican administration's plan to repeal Social Security and Medicare? Democrats have to replace the ACA with Medicare for All.
The Republican's plan to build detention centers to hold hundreds of thousands of immigrants, here legally as well as legally. What could go wrong? How many will die in them for lack of proper care? Their response: Democrats have to replace the ACA with Medicare for All, and Obama told parents to feed their children poison water.
We don't know yet if the Republicans will be able to have all our social programs declared unconstitutional before 2020 or how many might suffer and die in those camps if they're not stopped by the courts, but we can be assured that the screwed up Michael Moores of our world will blame whatever happens on Democrats and that they will do it right up to the 2020 general election.

(35,454 posts)as for the children in tents...for the over $700. a night, per, that we taxpayers are being charged for them, they could be staying at the DC Trump hotel where rooms for $427. a night are still available. Why doesn't Moore do a film about that scam?

(11,256 posts)I had a feeling that Moore was embellishing what really happened in order to fit into his "bash the Democrats" narrative. Knowing what we do about Obama, namely his pragmatism, this makes a lot more sense.

(22,977 posts)For the record I campaigned twice for President Obama. I do believe that at his core he's a decent man but that doesn't mean I agree with everything he did while in office.
The point in the film he is referencing comes after he has gone into detail about the water crisis AND the attempt to cover up test results. It also features a statement by Obama about "how as a kid he might have eaten a lead chip of paint" and "how I usually don't pull stunts like this" while pretending to drink a glass of water (twice!). The point, at least for me, was to show the betrayal felt by the citizens of Flint.
a backhand slap at PBO? No one said he was perfect or a saint.

Second, did it really take a genius to figure out that there would be a question about the Flint water crisis in the Michigan debate?
Third, the notion that Donna Brazille was looking out for HRC is preposterous. She even considered dumping her from the ticket after the voters had chosen her.
Fourth, I seriously doubt that the voters of Flint were disproportionately outraged by the Donna Brazille story. I think it was swing voters, and Sanders voters, who were most upset by that phony story.
