This was advice I received by an old, successful politician in my home town back in 1975. I was 23 years old and I ran some low level campaigns for councilors, mainly my Dad's (we won more than we lost). The guy who gave me that advice was a State Rep. and then the Mayor.
In our town, the advise giver was talking about the "big families" that could produce hundreds of votes in an election. If you pissed one of the family members off, you could lose hundreds of votes. So, as the advice went, don't threaten anybody's job because he's with another candidate. Kill them with kindness. You're not getting his or her vote, but don't turn the whole family against you. And, most of all, don't make them work against you.
This just came to mind while I'm watching the Kavanaugh situation. Republicans have lost the woman's vote this election cycle. But, if there's a hearing and 11 old white guys piss off every women in America by abusing a victim on national TV, the Republican Party will not only lose the female vote, women will work tirelessly against them, and I don't blame them. As bad as the gender gap is now for the Republicans, don't think for a moment it can't get worse.
