(12,858 posts)I could see the change developing in the late 70s and early 80s. IA GOP was taken over by the Religious Right. The party and state didn't know how to deal with that world and its tactics.
I grew up in OK. When OK was a 1 party state (dem) there were essentially 2 parts - right and left. SBC essentially ran the state. Every time there was an attempt to legalize beer, the pastors called out 'their flocks' and the bill failed.
I saw as a kid how the ReligRt operated and couldn't believe how naive my fellow Iowans were.
