Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI just joined a very small Women WalkOut just now....
I hadn't heard about it ahead of time, but a couple of women I work with (my direct supervisors, actually) asked if I would join in and of course I said yes.
We're on the West Coast, and it was 10:00 a.m. our time. We went out with a couple of co-workers, and eventually were joined by women from a couple of different offices, a small group, maybe a dozen altogether.
In that brief (10-15 minutes) we were on the street, people started talking to each other and I heard these three stories:
1) one woman was attacked by an 18-year old neighbor in her basement, who forced himself on top of her, when she was 13. She was "rescued" by her five-year old brother who heard her screaming "get off me!"
2) one woman was locked into a bathroom at work when she was 17, and a co-worker started putting his hands up her shirt.
3) one woman, at 18, was made to sit on a couch next to her boss while he groped her.
If I could hear this many incidents from a small group of women who mostly didn't know each other in that short a time, I think that there are millions of stories like this to be told - of course there are, we know that already - but that we might have actually hit a tipping point where women are ready to make it stop.
Big movements start small.

(27,800 posts)I think my real takeaway is being able to report these stories as I heard them, because oral history is powerful. They just all, matter-of-factly, said, "here's what happened to me".

The protest she is talking about was another when that was posted last night and today to walk out to protest Kavanaugh nationwide at 1:00 today.
I was at a rental car place and walked out and no one else even knew or cared who Kavaenaugh is. A 19 year old girl didn't even know there is a very important vote coming up. I told her to check her voter registration for the midterm sand filled her in on the issues. Last night the 20 something cashier at my supermarket was clueless too. I am thoroughly sick by the people in this country, especially the younger ones, who do not care at all about politics or voting.

(27,800 posts)They were from my building, I don't know who their employer is, but a couple were wearing badges, which may mean that they work for a tech company? (I work at a law firm). Like I said, it was a small band of us, but we started with three, went to five, and then a few other women tentatively approached us and asked if we were out there protesting Kavanaugh. So it was a small gathering (and I pay attention; I don't know why I didn't know about it, but perhaps it had more traction on the East Coast), but it was really validating to just be standing there in a group, connecting.

It's so goddam prevalent in our society. I am sickened by how common it is.

(37,648 posts)Women need to start reporting. I'm guilty of not reporting, either...for all the reasons we all know so well.
VOTE women into office is a good start.
REPORT these incidents, so they come into the light.
THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT! I'm retired, so don't have any place to walk out of (shucks).
