So what's the real reason Macron's polls are low? Do you know, JH? Merci.

Some think that he is - sound familiar ? - only president for the rich and the elite. The word "arrogant" pops up in a lot of news reports. He has undertaken a sizeable number of reforms, which is always going to be unpopular with some segment of the population.

(67,782 posts)....and those polled are so fractured. France is not like here, where there is essentially one or the other, there are always five or six choices. For example, if there are five to choose from and they're all equally divided, that means the "top" choice in the poll gets only 20%.
I haven't seen the actual poll he's referring to, but no doubt that's part of the reason.

(10,135 posts)He taxed pensions in order to give a tax cut to businesses. It's interesting that pensioners voted for him by a 2 to 1 margin and now he has increased their taxes. He has increased tution and had students out protesting. He's scrapped a wealth tax that he ran on and instead is talking about cutting corporate taxes.
He talked like a liberal and turned out to be a pro corporate stooge. No wonder he gets along so well with Trump.
But I still think Greenwald is an idiot because he claims Russia did not help push the election to Trump.
Funny how Greenwald can see some of the facts but is so absolutely blind to others.

(10,173 posts)Glenn is more ideologue than an objective journalist. He views are like a template he applies to every situation, which means he gets things wrong.
Macron's unpopularity one year in is not surprising for a French President. As Haggis noted a few replies up, the French are peculiar in that way. I'm sure Glenn doesn't understand these idiosyncracies, so his analysis is shallow. Glenn wants to portray Macron as a French version of either Clinton or Obama to justify right-wing backlash and his narratives about the U.S. election but France is France. The U.S is the U.S. Marine le Pen isn't an aquatic writing instrument which was discovered in 2017 but part of a movement which has existed in France for decades. Right now, in social democracies with low-income inequality and universal healthcare, neo-fascism is on the rise. Glenn will have his own explanations as to why that's the case but we can bet dollars to donuts he won't touch on the thorny issue of Cultural Anxiety because that would mean he'd have to consider identity politics and Glenn can't have that.
I'm uncomfortable with the way Glenn describes Macron's policies: It's not neo-liberalism it's more classic liberalism. While neo-liberalism shares a lot in common with classic liberalism, a neo-liberal would not push protectionism in this way When Macron was Minister of the Economy he annoyed leftists, so it's no surprise his policies are untenable for them. He doesn't seem interested in social issues, he sometimes comes across as socially conservative because of this disinterest and this has made Liberals wary of him.
Hulot's resignation, the Bayrou funding scandal and the Benalla affair also hurt Macron. His "jupiterian" style of leadership isn't helping him either, comparing your leadership style to that of a God isn't a good look.
Glenn's worldview won't grasp such complexities so the best he can come up with is to use Macron's unpopularity as a proxy to attack Liberals in the west.

(22,911 posts)This is not in defense of Glenn. I think we have to be accurate in our political language, especially under current conditions. The accusation was that Obama interfered in the election. Whatever the weakness of that argument, it still is not the same as saying that Obama rigged the election. Those claims are not identical. It is how Trump uses language to conflate terms to a higher incendiary level. No one has claimed that Obama rigged any election, except perhaps Trump.
JHan
(10,173 posts)That's the connection he wants to make to his audience. His argument is that the U.S "interferes", so the Russians "interfered" too, making a false equivocation. Because the Russians did more than "Interfere", they got into our electoral systems.

The simple fact that she spoke out against him. Was enough for Putin to say her calling for fair elections U.S. "interference".
JHan
(10,173 posts)because she dared to comment on electoral procedure in Russia. It's a common thing to hear among some "America interfered in Ukraine so America can't complain when Russia "Interferes" in America"
I wouldn't have cause for complaint if it was only Glenn saying this nonsense, but the intercept has been churning out the garbage too.

(10,173 posts)Strongly held beliefs don't equal intelligence or insight - a mistake often made by publications like *The New Yorker which had a long article about him recently. As the Mueller investigation heats up, people like Greenwald are going to continue to tell us that what we're seeing is not what we're seeing, what we're hearing is not what we're hearing. I usually ignore him, but I have no problem exposing him for the fraud he is.
