(32,577 posts)His first wife Ivana said he kept that book on his nightstand, but whether he ever actually read it or not is anyone's guess. Believe me Mein Kampf (Hitler's memoir) would not have been appealing for Cheeto, and I doubt he could get past the first few pages. It's really dense, rant-y and not very interesting.

(6,831 posts)When I was in college - back in the dark ages - taking German, we each had to translate a chapter of "Mein Kampf." Reading it in German is so high up there on the pain scale, it's unqualifiable. But put into English, it is (besides being a despicable screed) a brilliantly-written treatise (if you're into Nationalism). Hitler is tedious and verbose (even by German standards) in German, but he's worse in English. There is NO way that Stumpy ever read it. It's too academic and dense for him to even begin to understand it.

(4,858 posts)...when he was sworn in in 1933, the country was on the brink of collapse. He restored confidence, and made some very sensible reforms. The economy grew again, but unemployment remained stubbornly high. Then, after his re-election in 1936, when the economy really showed signs of taking off, he made the dumb decision to try to "balance the budget". Result--another depression, which was quickly fixed when he abandoned budget-balancing and started spending some money. When he died in 1945, the war was all but won, the US bestrode the world like a colossus, and we were ready for the greatest generation of prosperity any nation has ever had. All in all, I'd give him a B+ for how he dealt with the economy.

(62,500 posts)it was at 14% at the start of WW2. I think that's pretty damn good. Considering it was a global collapse.
Also, Truman also tried the balance the budget deal after the war and re-instituted a peacetime economy BUT he didn't count on the corps or the unions wanting to make money and get raises. Can't blame either group.
Because of this we hit a pretty substantial recession in 1947-48. John L. Lewis and the steal, coal and auto magnets met their match in negotiations when dealing with Truman.
Like him or not, Truman did a pretty remarkable job of pulling the US out of a second major depression.

(56,828 posts)because moderate Democrats pushed him to do it.
That, of course, led to Republicans making huge gains in 1938 when they had been on the verge of being wiped out - Republicans only had 88 seats after the '36 election. Democrats had 334, and two minor parties had 13 seats combined.

FDR won a global war, legalized beer, and created Social Security--and Trump thinks he has done more than any other president. He should read a book.

(56,828 posts)but, i would argue that in less than 2 years Trump:
1) Has turned America into an international pariah and international laughingstock
2) Torn down many of the norms of democracy here at home
3) Greatly increased divisions in America while overseeing a rise in racism, homophobia and sexism.

(42,770 posts)Accomplishments with bad things but he's got a shitload. It drives me crazy when he and Sanders brag about accomplishments and NO ONE calls them out..."like what?" Someone needs to dig into his hundreds of deregulation moves..bet there's a treasure trove of accomplishments there.
