I'm beginning to think these blanket denials from Trump, Kavanaugh, etc are all rooted in the same

sort of misstatement. When they first get confronted with something, they are put on the spot: "Did you commit this misdeed?" and inevitably their reflexive reaction is "No I didn't."

But they aren't really saying "I didn't... perform that action at that time in that place amongst that company." What they are saying is "I didn't... do wrong."

Those are very different things.

But having staked out the position of the latter, any further examination/discussion necessitates they also adopt the former in order to have any chance to win the argument. And that is what leads to these ridiculous unbelievable counterfactual insistences on their part -- their entitlement allows them to believe they did nothing WRONG, therefore the events themselves must not have happened.
