He knows this. The very thought of it will be intolerable for him. Chances just skyrocketed that he will withdraw rather than undergo any scrutiny. Every second this is delayed, his nomination becomes less and less likely.

(5,586 posts)As far as i know, the FBI investigation Flake is referring to only pertains to Ford's allegations, and not into anything else.
Ford hasn't identified a time or a place. There won't be emails or texts they can subpoena. Phone records won't be available. No street cameras or camera phone footage will be available. There's no chance at any physical evidence.
All of the people she's indicated were there are on record as saying they don't remember such an event taking place. 2 of them have signed out affidavits on this, and will be in legal jeopardy if they recant / change their testimony. Kavanaugh's 2 friends will have lawyers sitting next to them ensuring they don't place themselves in further legal jeopardy regardless of the truth. If Ms. Keyser changes her statement now, it will be considered very suspect.
This was never about putting Kavanaugh in jail, or convicting him of a crime. It's about labeling him as a rapist because Ford is believable, and getting Senators to vote against him. But if it comes down to actual physical or convict-able proof, I feel the FBI investigation will come up wanting.

(12,344 posts)And it lists the names of people who said the party never happened. It identifies some of the people who Ford said were there, including the person who lived at the house (who we haven't heard from yet). It shows that the purpose of the party was to drink beer, and Kavanaugh said he never drunk underage and never went to parties during the week.
Mitchell was zeroing in on all this when Graham cut her off.
Which means he committed perjury and the Republicans on the committee know it. The perjury is going to kill Kavanaugh.

Can't do a real investigation in one week. It's just ass-covering rhetoric.
AdamGG
(1,286 posts)I think they spent 3 weeks investigating Anita Hill. One week is so short that, depending on how many people the FBI puts on the task, there could still be plenty of loose ends. If they are going to actually pause for a break, it's idiotic not to do it right and give the FBI at least two weeks look into things in more depth.
The idea of looking at Dr. Ford's charges, but doing it in a ridiculously abbreviated hearing, with Senators only allotted 5 minutes each, and then in a rushed one week investigation is stupid. This is a lifetime appointment to a position at the heart of our democracy functioning correctly and the constant rush for artificial deadlines is complete bullshit. I really hope this costs the R's in November more than they imagined.

(14,565 posts)I just made a long related comment on Predictit. There is considerable danger here that I don't think is being evaluated properly. Republicans really don't have any semblance of effective messaging right now toward the midterm. But this Kavanaugh situation potentially hands them one on a silver platter.
Let's say the FBI turns up nothing on Kavanaugh and he is confirmed. Donald Trump will immediately chirp and chirp on twitter and everywhere else. His approval rating goes up. That is absolutely guaranteed.
Then he takes to the midterm and says can you believe Democrats attacked such a great American as Brett Kavanaugh? They wasted time that could have been devoted to making America great again. He starts saying that the Russia investigation and everything else is likewise a partisan witch hunt that will turn up nothing and is merely taking longer to play out.
I am very good at situational impact. We better hope Kavanaugh is disqualified because if it plays out as I described above, the blue wave takes a hit.
Calista241
(5,586 posts)And from next Friday until the end of time, Donald fucking Trump will be able to call it "just another Kavanaugh type accusation," and a significant portion of the population will believe it.
He'll be calling it another Duke Lacrosse situation, and use it to label anyone alleging something like this against a Republican.
And what's worse, if Trump gets to appoint ANOTHER justice, they'll use this to inoculate the next nominee.

This is just a cabaret show for a week to distract and cover-up. Kavanaugh will be voted in next Friday. Trump is controlling the investigation, which means it will limited no matter how much he and that bitch Conway say it's unlimited in well-orchestrated soundbites. The FBI is crippled and will dig up nothing, because they can't even interview Julie Swetnick, FFS. Plus, on top of that, the report won't be released to the public. And even if it leaks, it will be a nothing-burger.
