After troubled Orlando private school Beta Prep closes, director opens new campus in DeLand
A small private school opened last month in DeLand, promising an elite education and 100 percent college attendance for its students, many of whom attend thanks to state-backed scholarships.
DeLand Preparatory Academy won approval from the Florida Department of Education over the summer to receive the scholarships, even though just months earlier the schools director had shuttered an Orlando-area school one that also relied heavily on the scholarships with a troubled track record.
In March, a former teacher of the closed campus, Beta Preparatory Collegiate Academy, sent a two-page complaint to the education department, accusing a coworker of touching students in a sexual way and watching child pornography at school.
The department said it forwarded the complaint to the Florida Department of Children and Families, but DCF said it didnt receive the document. DCF began investigating the allegations only last month, after an Orlando Sentinel reporter who had received the complaint through a public records request shared it.
