A little about underage drinking.

I'm 22 years older than Barf Kavanaugh, and came of age long before him, but my 51 year old daughter was /is in the same age group, so I'm fairly well able to speak from personal and parental experience with under age drinking.

As a three sport high school athlete, drinking ANY alcohol was a very taboo thing. Not saying I or others never did, but it sure as hell wasn't a regular or acceptable activity. First of all, at 18 we could buy 3.2 beer at the ballpark or the few places that sold it. Regular beer, wine or hard liquor was something that was legal at 21. Sure, there was always spiked party punch, but rarely did anyone have bottles or cases of beer. Our Parents weren't having it under any circumstances and athlete strongly believed it was harmful to your performance.

Back then, it was very difficult to be a drinker and be a top student. It just wasn't possible. Something is bad wrong w/ Kavanaugh's story about being wrapped up in sports and study and have time to be a known boozer. Who was purchasing the booze for these kids ? I doubt if booze was sold in that particular community, so there had to have been a concerted effort to acquire said booze. This guys mother was an officer of the court in her role as a deputy D.A. in the local area, was she and other parents ok with this ?

There's some bullshitting going on here, which just adds to the whole dishonesty of this guy and his enablers.

could legitimately get good grades and perform well in sports while consistently boozing to excess. You raise several great points.

10 or 15 bars, all of which readily accepted fake ID's of 16 year olds. (The drinking age was 18).

I know many very good students who graduated from college with raging drinking problems.

I played varsity sports, I was a section leader in the orchestra for musicals, ballets, operas. I finished 3rd in my class.

I drank beer in high school, regularly. I smoked hecka weed, too. I took acid, Quaaludes, speed. Fuck, I got ahold of Opium from a kid who's brother was in the Navy and brought it back from the ME. I had access to 3.2% beer, and a fake ID I made myself. My parents never caught me. OK, once, with a little bit of weed, and they turned me into my school Principal.

The 70s and early 80s were peak underage substance use time - before DARE, before cops and parents knew what weed smelled like.

Sure, there were kids that fucked up, but there were lots of others that used and suffered no consequences. I suggest you watch "Dazed and Confused" to get a feel for the era.

Kids will get booze - if they have to, they'll pay a bum to buy it for them.

convinced Mom that it was herbal tea she found on my sister, and not weed. Spoiler: my mom went for seconds of the Entenman’s that afternoon.

It was for naught. Mom had no clue. Bless her Irish Catholic soul, the Bronx did not tarnish her.
