The very best thing we can do in Washington, DC is to end the "Boy's Club"

atmosphere of government. We'll do that by electing more and more women to legislative positions and hiring more and more women to fill top administrative positions. We're on that path right now, so I encourage everyone to support progressive women who are running for office both financially and in their campaigns.

Congress, for example, has been an exclusive "boy's club" since the founding of this nation. Because of that, it is dominated by old white men with law degrees from Ivy League colleges. A sizable percentage are also fraternity members. The more women we can seat in our legislatures, the less influence that group will have.

I can think of nothing more important than to balance government participation between men and women. I'm proud to say that both of my senators and my House representative are women. I have campaigned for them and done my best to help them take their seat in those legislative bodies.

Most people are familiar with Amy Klobuchar from the recent Senate hearings. Tina Smith is new to the Senate, but is a strong progressive. Betty McCollum, my representative, has won re-election several times and will win again this year. I hope to see more and more strong, thoughtful women in the House and Senate following each upcoming election, beginning with this year's.

End our "Boy's Club" Congress and the "Boy's Club" state legislatures, too. We can do it, and it will transform government.

It’s time we had ordinary Americans representing us. Basta with the millionaire representatives.

5. Unfortunately, one huge reason why there are so many rich people in Congress

is that it's so damned expensive to run in the first place. You'll probably have to quit your job to spend all your time campaigning, and unless you're the owner of a business that runs itself or you have some other source of income, that could be a real problem. It also helps to be well-connected to the big donors, and most ordinary people don't have those connections. Lately there have been some un-rich people who are able to get grassroots support, but the old entrenched congresscritters got there because they're rich and could afford it.

Our government is too much dominated by men who are primarily unethical, cynical actors-they keep out women and drive away good men
