It's the typical stuff. Sen. Cassidy, though, is out and out LYING. Saying the statements by witnesses said there was no such party as Ford talked about. That's a lie. He's calling for an investigation into Diane Feinstein, of all people, for leaking the accusations. As if Feinstein would break her word to Ford to keep her identity confidential. As if Feinstein would behave unethically.

I'm angry about the good ol' boy network. The elite privileged network. The "hysterical woman who is confused" meme.

There were I think 58 accusers of Cosby, and STILL many men cont'd to say they were making it up, lying, or "confused."

But me being angry won't help the Democratic Party, since I was going to vote Democratic, anyway.

Good examples for of the old Right wing men.Even on Fox one of the panelists said Grassley and Hatch are a reason for term limits. Both were in the Clarence Thomas panel.

I would include Graham and Kennedy in that. Both are disgraceful ,Hatch just sat there and Grassley looked befuddled during the negotiations with Coons and Flake. Then quickly slammed the gavel down with that 2 hour limit that is never used. He just wanted to get out of the mess Republicans made.

Corey Booker was remarkable with his summation, then when Grassley refused his request he refused to take part in this!

The hearings this week brought back memories of the Clarence Thomas hearings, and the despicable treatment of Anita Hill. I really thought that we had made some progress, but after the last two days, I don't think so. I couldn't watch much of the questioning of Kavanaugh by the Republicans; it was just too nauseating. And then there was Kavanaugh himself. I disliked him before, but now I feel nothing but contempt for him. He reminds me of some of the wealthy male university students I taught years ago: smug, rude, condescending, entitled, and misogynistic. There is a definite type, and they often are frat boys. Every time I see him now, I want to slap his face.

I really fear for the young women of this country (as well as for everyone else!) if we don't get this administration out of power soon. We are going backwards in so many areas, women's rights being among them, and the young people are going to have to cope with the consequences, which are too numerous and depressing to list.

Sep 2018

Since the '60s there have been many improvements for women in respect of legal rights and opportunities. When I was growing up the job ads in the newspapers were segregated by sex - if you were a woman you could apply for a job as a secretary, an elementary school teacher, a nurse, a bookkeeper, or a cleaning lady and not much else. When I graduated from college my adviser told me not to worry about a career because I would just get married anyhow. You couldn't get a bank loan or a credit card without your husband co-signing for you. You couldn't walk past a construction area without a bunch of guys hooting and yelling obscenities at you. Not wanting children or keeping your own name at marriage were heresies because normal women were subservient baby machines.

Things got better. We could get decent jobs even though we still got paid less than men. We could get loans without Daddy or Hubby cosigning. There were new laws against sexual harassment, even though it never went away. But progress is slow; I get that.

This week, though, I looked at those shriveled, fossilized old men - the same ones that disrespected Anita Hill, the same ones that voted against every law that ever helped women move toward equality - and I saw that they were still in power and still were going to do everything they could do to keep their boots on our necks, and their hands over our mouths no matter how loudly we tried to scream.

I'm too old for this shit. I didn't want to be still protesting the patriarchy as a retiree - but here I am, and here we are. Angry? Oh, hell, yes.

Sep 2018

Those of us in a certain age group remember all of those things and yes, we have made terrific progress on many fronts, but the sexual harassment and assault areas have not changed much.

When you and I were younger it was very rare to see a female doctor, female lawyer or female judge or Senator/Representative/Governor. Now women have more college degrees than men, law and medical school classes are majority women, public universities have female Presidents and more tenured professors, etc. etc. Women are not stigmatized for not marrying or divorce. We had to fight tooth and nail to get to this point, so we need to keep fighting in any way we can and demanding equality.

There are days I feel the same way - I'm too old for this shit. I do find an incredible amount of young women who have no idea of what our generation had to do and lived with when we were younger. I have had young people work for me for the past ten years and I would tell the young women my story and stories about what it used to be like and some of them were shocked. Most didn't think it would ever be a problem for them, so no worries. It could get discouraging.

Persist and fight like never before. And like those women in the elevator with flaky Flake??? Make sure they hear your voices and what you have to say.

There WILL be riots. 1973 was a different time (I was in HS), the idea of having control over your body, having a real choice about whether/when/with whom/how many children you will have was a pretty new idea. Guess what, old men? We’ve gotten pretty accustomed to this concept. There’s no putting the genie back in the bottle. You think women are mad now?

Those of us who are sexual assault survivors have been through hell this past week. It's been 44 years since I was raped. I've been relatively PTSD free for most of a decade. Not this week. This week brought it all back. And the Republicans in the senate heard our agony - and figuratively shit on us. We don't matter, when our truths threaten the careers of our rapists.

Those who aren't sexual survivors still live with the threat of sexual violence every day. There's a classroom scenario description going around - the chalkboard is divided down the middle by a line. Men on one side, women on the others. The men are asked what they do on a daily basis to avoid sexual assault - and can't come up with anything other than - jokingly - suggesting avoiding prison. Women, on the other hand, filled their side of the board without hesitation. It's just our reality. Even if the hearings this week didn't open raw wounds, they reminded us of everything we do every single day to prevent being assaulted.

Then on facebook we're confronted with the meme that tells me I if I have a son I should be scared because it is terrifying that at any time, any girl can make up any story about any boy that can neither be proved or disproved and completely ruin any boy's life.

Funny, I don't remember any similar meme suggesting mothers of daughters should be scared for their daughters because of the exponentially more likely event that any boy at any time can sexually abuse me, and I will not be able to prove it happened and not only will the assault completely ruin her life, but so will keeping the secret for decades.

And then I come to DU - and at least four threads are lauding Judge - a rape accomplice - as some sort of unsung hero who intentionally interrupted the assault and saved Ford. And when I suggest that rape apologists should not be touting their stories here, I am scolded for being an angry bully.

You bet I'm angry.

She has cried about this with actual tears. When she came to the US from Japan, one of the other Japanese girls staying at the Y with her got picked up by two guys promising a cool party. They took her to their place in a bad part of town and very violently raped her - barely got out alive. It wasn’t my wife, but the impact on my wife was deep (obviously much worse for the victim) and she has brought this up since this fiasco began.
