They aren't now, and have never been running an open investigation of rapie mcrape face. They conducted a series of background checks. The newest round of checks aren't an investigation either.
They are calling a small list of people and asking some questions related to accusations. That is all they are doing. They are probably finished. Once the call is completed, they will document what was said. They won't draw any conclusions on the veracity of the answers. They will just transcribe them.
Despite what people seem to think, an FBI agent can't just conduct an investigation. They have to have permission from higher up to do that. That protects you from being investigated without probable cause.
Besides, the people conducting the background checks pretty much only do background checks. They may not even be regular employees. They could be contractors.
I've been through multiple fbi background checks. The agents that met with and interviewed me were very clear that they were contractors, but they had the same legal status as an agent.
This isn't the x-files. This isn't a tv show. The fbi conducts thousands of background checks a year, and they dedicated staff for it.
Anything these people find is merely documented. They don't do the follow up if any is required. The information would be forwarded to another division for followup.
So PLEASE stop talking about this like it's part of muehler's work. It's more akin to a stenographer reading a list of questions and writing down the answers.

(14,708 posts)Is it a double dog dare, or just a regular one?
Just curious.
If people keep saying it over and over, I guess we might just find out.
Or were you referring to the new checks having been finished?
It is just an opinion. But really, we already know 2 are done. How long would 2 or 3 more take?
If turtle face has shown anything, it's that he doesn't want any more delays. If the reports are finished, they won't sit on them. They will vote on them if they have the votes. If they don't, well, that is something else.

(14,708 posts)I hate trump and the modern day gop. I guess I'm just cynical as hell these days. If there is anything in my posts that make it sound like I'm on their team, it is not intended and probably not really there if you look back.
But, no matter. This looks like it's just a very limited extension of the background check process, and not a criminal investigation.
People do know what gov't background checks are, right?
You start by filling out a very extensive questionnaire. It's the who/what/where of your life. It's really just the facts m'am type of stuff. Where you've lived, where you worked, what trips overseas have you taken, and the names of people who knew you in those places or you had contact with.
An agent then looks at your package and starts verifying what your said, as well as looking at your finances, credit scores, criminal hiostory, civil legal history, social media history etc.
Then they will call all of those names you gave them to verify the information you provided. Did you really live/work there? Did they know of any reason you wouldn't be suitable in a position of trust, etc. Very general stuff.
The last question is usually something open ended like "Is there anytthing else you can think of that would be of interest to us in making this decision...".
They then write up what they asked and what each person said. It gets added to your package. They don't draw conclusions like "this is a criminal act". They just document what was said.
Someone else reviews it and makes a decision for a recommendation. If there is anything of a criminal nature disclosed, it is referred to another department.
The agents doing the interviews pretty much do only background checks. They are very often third party contractors that have been sworn in to do this one function.
So that's a background check. They are really only verifying the information you provided and building a standardized report on your character and likelihood to perform your job without undo risk.
They don't look for crimes, and they don't burrow into your life beyond determining what you have told them is true.
It is an imperfect system to be sure. But the gov't does thousands of these a year. And it meets their needs.
