how many Phil Bredesen yard signs there are. This is Marsha Blackburn's district and there are some signs for her, but she is vastly outnumbered. Phil has a new devastating ad showing the 60 Minutes' piece where Blackburn is exposed for taking $800 K from the opioid manufacturers to sponsor the law which prohibits the DEA from suing them and getting the drugs off the street. He always ends with "she is what's wrong with Washington". I'm feeling really good about our chances in November!

(128,841 posts)I am hoping that holds and your neighborhood makes the right decision to vote (D) or don't vote at all. I wouldn't put it past Blackburn to try to get desperate at the last minute because they surely can't lose that seat in the Senate.

(128,841 posts)I had high hopes for Harold Ford when he was running there and was on the precipice of a win when the black man-lusting-after-the-white-woman "race card" was flagrantly invoked in ads (although he has gone over to the dark side anyway), so knowing that angle can't really be used, I am hoping that the people of TN (where I had relatives who had moved there well over a century ago), will make the right choice!

First time riding around, and theres only 1x house with Ted Cruz signs (granted that one house has 7 of them in their yard, but only 1 house). I havent seen a single Culberson sign yet, but theres plenty of Beto and Lizzie signs in yards.
Just.. SHOW UP AND VOTE!!!

(58,785 posts)assumed here, though, that people don't bother to put out yard signs. There are still people here who think they've personally never socialized with (or "met" ) a liberal, or a Jew.
The latter subject comes up sometimes when someone learns my husband's Jewish, but the humorous self-amazement that sometimes accompanies this response is charming. Those know there's a much bigger world "out there" and aren't afraid of it.

(10,252 posts)I live in Dallas, and drove down Park Lane, which is in Highland Park, an extremely rich section. Homes on Park Lane are not houses, they are enormous 2 and 3-story French chateaus. I saw many Beto signs on the wrought-iron gates of their stone wall fences. It really surprized me. Beto signs all over town. I have only seen 2 Cruz signs. I guess everyone pretty much hates Ted these days. He's widely seen as a self-serving asshole.

I became a democrat in the summer of 2016. Can't imagine that I would ever vote anything but a democratic ticket ever again.

(81,210 posts)Just went canvassing over the weekend for a state Senate candidate and was partnered with a woman whod never even imagined shed be involved in any kind of political activism.
At least, until 2016.
And by Jove, last Saturday, there she was, schlepping through neighborhoods, knocking on doors, talking to people, talking up our candidate - and doing so as a well-informed promoter of that candidate. She was terrific! And shed never done anything of the kind before, until trump. I had the flyers and the basic spiel, she had the clipboard with our assigned route and the addresses of each house we were supposed to approach, and she made the notes after each encounter, as she threw in the parting words - the invitation to join us volunteers for this particular campaign.
What a great afternoon that was! Only one door slam. And another dude who, when I started in with our candidates proposals FOR access to affordable health care for all, started in with that selfish short-sighted crap about us taxpayers paying so other people can get it for free... he soon got to different mumbling about babykillers... and we just agreed to disagree and took our leave. But everybody else who was home to answer the doorbell was receptive, undecided because they hadnt heard about the candidate (WE took care of that!) or were enthusiastic and already kinda knew about him. There was also one additional guy who questioned us... which party were we? Whereupon we said Democrats and he eagerly took our flyer and said good! Thats all I need to know! We encountered a few whod already resolved to vote for Democrats up and down the ballot, which was most encouraging!
We didnt have to do much hard selling. Wed describe what our mans positions were on the issues and we got a lot of validation that those positions were theirs as well.
Ive done a number of canvassing things since the Hillary campaign. Always a challenge to kick yourself in the backside to get started, but once you do, it gets easier and easier, house by house. And it REALLY helps to have a good partner. Makes all the difference in the world.
We had a STELLAR absolutey kick-ass partner during the canvass for Hillary. We worked a little beach-ish community with a lot of apartments and small houses. There were three of us - a young woman who was a bit introverted so we had her handle the clipboard and the note-taking. The other woman was a local activist who proudly opened every discussion by introducing herself as the person who had pushed the neighborhood council to get a messed up street repaved. That street just happened to be part of our route. That tactic worked like magic! Everybody instantly became favorably predisposed toward whatever any of us had to say!
Thats a handy-dandy little strategy for your back pocket, with things like canvassing, btw. If youve ever done something beneficial for the neighborhood, that automatically makes you one of the good guys, and people will be far more receptive to whatever youre working on now.

I am amazed at the people who have listened to me. I have more words than I have money or ability to trek the hills here in trump country. It seems when I take time and break it down in simple terms, pointing out what is REALLY happening in America they're finally woke. I love it when I see their eyes open and they realize their ignorance on the subject. I explain the things that converted me from R to D and they seem to seem to get it. I always explain to them that it has taken me some time to get the confidence to call and/or email my senators but nothing makes me perform better than a combination of fear and anger. They have some fear and anger when we talk about healthcare, senior issues, taxes, women's issues and the like - but the lack of basic decency in this administration is where I usually leave it. I reside in a small apartment complex in the Midwest -totally trump country. As far as I know in Nov. 2016 I was the only tenant in the complex to support the democratic party - in the primary we everyone voted republican - most supporting the bafoon in the WH. Now I'm told by several that there are no trump supporters here in the smaller cluster of 7 apartments that I live in. As for me, I have always been a never trumper and now I am a NEVER REPUBLICAN! I also gotta tell ya - I noticed this weekend that one of my neighbors has not only got her some democrat yard signs - but I'll be darn if there wasn't a stash of 4 more behind her A/C unit. Obviously she got some for family and friends I haven't seen her yet to thank her for her support but plan to keep encouraging her (and everyone else I come into contact with). Her 94 yr old husband was the last one here to see the light but he's in ill health and not as out spiken as her - not sure if he agrees or just agrees with his younger healthier stronger more vocal wife that butters his damn bread!!! THANKS for your warm welcome and encouragement!!!

(10,154 posts)The older folks remember him when times were better. Blackburn has an ad out that complains about his record as Gov. It's not very convincing considering the RepubliCON before him tried to institute a state income tax. There was almost a riot over it.

(17,911 posts)how well thought of Bredesen is in TN. Even after years of Faux propaganda in my old home state, he's still respected, has tremendous name recognition and a good track record. Great mayor. Great governor. He'll make a damn good senator.

So tired of hearing that Muslims are going to climb in the window at night and slit our throats, that women are children, who should be seen and not heard, that news is false, and science is unnecessary and must be stiffled, that healthcare is a privilege. and that we should all be happy and grateful that we have 2 and 3 $7.50/hr jobs.
Wouldn't it be great to have a president that actually acts presidential, and congress critters, who actually get some things done that make our lives better?

(2,732 posts)Republicans paid for social science research on the impact of yard signs. I can't cite the details though I remember reading about it. I noticed Rick Perry's last couple of campaigns for Texas Governor had very few signs. These days they generally don't use as many unless it's someone with poor name recognition.
Most of them save their money to use in other ways these days.
