Atticus Finch from Harper Lee's memorable novel, To Kill A Mockingbird.. And in absurd fashion, Kavanaugh is compared to Tom Robinson, unjustly accused of rape by that woman Mayella Ewell.
Because there is no limit to the Republican's ridiculous justifications, even highjacking a novel that they no doubt would've banned back in the day for its unpleasant truths, primarily hatred, racism and the unequal distribution of justice.
Talk about flailing as they defend the indefensible!

(97 posts)Republicans have figured it out, just say whatever bullshit they want, truth be damned. Advertising is not truthful. Advertising is there to make you believe you need something even if you don't need it. It's brainwashing, it's propaganda. Republicans have been doing this for 30+ years, while Democrats actually try to talk about ideas. Slogans beat ideas in this day and age sad to say.

(52,195 posts)there seem to be no such restrictions on republicans.
they engage in obvious fiction and ludicrous fantasy and still garner 35+% of the population somehow.
Keep in mind also, those laws (such as truth in advertising laws) are RESISTED by Republicans so if they had their way our marketplace would be no different. A total shit show. What these fools do NOT realize is that "free market" economics DEPENDS on truth in advertising and labeling laws, laws the Reich is ostensibly opposed to. They are not even good at promoting the free market as their willful ignorance and their adherence to the oligarchy is ultimately their political ideology/religion.

(70,186 posts)Referencing the iconic novel Harper Lees To Kill A Mockingbird is gaining some momentum among conservatives attempting to put their defense of Supreme Court nominee Brett M. Kavanaugh in larger cultural context. But the analogy appears not to fully grasp race, class and privilege in the current political climate and therefore breaks down pretty quickly.
The thread has been picked up in the Wall Street Journal, the National Review and on Fox News. Sen. John Cornyn (R.-Tex.) ran with it on the Senate floor on Thursday:

My initial question was: Did they even read the book or simply skim the Cliff Notes?
Oy!

(10,828 posts)Fox is Propaganda Central so regardless of where the meme started, Fox can always be relied on for repeats and amplification. However, it was reported that Rich Lowry at the National Review was running with the analogy. Why he or the rest thought this comparison was anything but laughable is stunning. But then if you're hawking to voters who wouldn't realize how preposterous the analogy is? Well then anything can fly.
For the pols and pundits pushing the idea? Absolutely shameless.

Have you no sense of decency, sir?
Again, they have the characters skewed.

Lindsey Graham is Mayella Ewell
Dr. Ford is BOTH Atticus Finch AND Tom Robinson
