(28,929 posts)The Jones' poll also found that all religious groups in Utah highly disapprove of him, except for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Those who consider themselves "very active" LDS members liked his efforts 62 to 37 percent. Among "somewhat active" members, the approval drops to 48 percent versus 46 percent disapproval.

(31,261 posts)I have done business with lots of Mormons. Occasionally you find a fake believer, but they generally stand behind their values. Trump'd personal conduct and criminality offends them and most won't look the other way.

They were very patriarchal but would not have approved of Trump.

(10,571 posts)But as a whole the LDS church is awful for families - leave the church and your family falls apart. The church has even asked that members not leave inheritance to gay family members.

(2,949 posts)I've lived in Utah the majority of my almost 70 years on this earth. The Church has the last say in this state, & if they were truly against the amoral candidate, they would have let their flock know. The younger generation may be trying to think for themselves, but the Church Elders have the ear of most "faithful".
It's very discouraging trying to fight the Republican majority in this tightly gerrymandered state.

(18,868 posts)But they haven't ever had to deal with a Republican president as amoral and close to down right evil as this one.
That is a real problem fora lot of Repubs right now.
I think the Mormon church is really interesting. And when I was there in the 60's the Church controlled every aspect of daily life. It was amazing how the religion and every other aspect of life are so interwoven there.
Not the same but sort of like the Old Order Amish or the Ultra Orthodox Jews.

(10,721 posts)As DSB said, it probably has something to do with Mormonism.
He's still more popular in Utah than the country as a whole.

(34,661 posts)Romney is coming back to carry the Constitution on a White Horse. Utah is about 57% Mormon, and in certain Communities it is 75+%. And to think,Utah voted over overwhelmingly for FDR three times.
To see this poll is interesting considering what the recent polling numbers for the hard core Rethugs like Love,Bishop,Stewart and Chaffetz replacement are polling at this point.
Running joke in Utah is,if it has a R after their name, they get the vote.

During my business travels, Utah's populace had the most variety of contrast I witnessed over the country. From loads of pious Mormons to hell-raising cowboys and ranchers to miners to high-tech geeks.
I suspect a lot of Utah folks are very environmentally conscious and resent tRump's gutting of the EPA and screwing with their beloved national parks and monuments, as he wants mining and other interests to move in on those lands.
Would seem to be a difficult state to predict...... .....

(5,914 posts)"Devout" Mormons tend to be enormous hypocrites, just as "devout" members of any religion are.
Here's an old joke for you:
How many Mormons do you bring on a fishing trip if you plan to drink beer?
At least two. If you bring one, he'll drink all your beer.
