I just realized that Trump means me. He wants to strip my U.S. citizenship.

My father was Canadian and lived in the U.S. on a green card from the time he arrived in his twenties until his death at 59.

I was born to an immigrant parent.

Trump means me.

I feel sick.

Case closed... Or maybe we should actually let the hyper-idiot remove himself from the country. Then when Warren or Beto remove the presidential order, everyone can move back in. Trump's own terrorist blockades would keep him out.

My grandparents were naturalized citizens - OTB from Great Britain. My parents were born here; Daddy's gone, but Mum is in her 80s. She asked me if I thought he could deport her. We don't have any family over there anymore, as they all moved to the States and Canada after the war. I told her: Over my rotting corpse.

His dad had a green card or the like but not sure that my dad was here legally. He was a citizen before I was born but under Trump Rules, coming from a liberal country might doom me.

Although I am uncertain how many of them are eligible to vote, this may not be what Ted Cruz wanted to hear from his President a week before the election. It is possible that whilst attempting to energize his base to vote, he may have just rallied the Hispanic voter base to vote against him.

It has been a pleasure to watch Beto O'Rourke run his campaign, even though I thought his chances were slim.

Perhaps this will change things a bit.

Perhaps Trump has just turned nearly 20% of the US population against the GOP for a generation, and if this results in Texas turning blue, the GOP may have lost the Presidency for the foreseeable future.

It will be up to the Democratic party to ensure that Hispanics can - and do - all vote.

I don't think anyone's talking about attacking those with one citizen parent and one noncitizen parent, like Ted Cruz. But most of Trump's kids have immigrant mothers, and their father also has an immigrant mother, and his father had two immigrant parents. Without birthright citizenship, Fred the klansman would have been a noncitizen, so unless he managed to become naturalized as an adult before he got married, hooking up with a Scotswoman would have left Donald, Don Jr, Ivanka, Eric, and Barron all high and dry.

card instead. It turned out that he became a nice asset for his company so when they found out about his status they pulled strings and got him a green card (He was Canadian too).

He then went on to become a US citizen.

I asked my mother why they didn't try and fix the situation before that and she said that they were so frightened and they didn't know what to do. Neither of them had any formal education past high school.

I was put on the no-fly list and then had my naturalization challeneged. In 1988 I was charged with inciting a riot at the Tacoma appearance of George Bush Sr as he campaigned for Pres. They dropped the charges after we dropped a law suit (we were roughed up by the republican security force) he had to leave 17 minutes early and since then a repub nominee for pres hasn't campaigned in the city limits of Tacoma. I also did the same thing with Rick Santorum. I have been protesting all my life, so I have a record and they used that to put me on the no fly. I also had to get an attorney and appear before a panel to sort out mny naturalization. I have been in and out of the country 54 times since I first came here. They had the results of my citizenship test, my natualization papers, and the listing of each airport and date I came in and out of the US. It was all bullshit to mess with me. Lately I have been very front and center in the immigration struggle, protesting at the NWDC and stopping busses from leaving to round up immigrants. So I am off the no fly and I am also ok with the citizenship stuff. In fact my wife and I are going to be in G=Frankfurt for the first time as an adult during Christmas time in a few weeks and then I am going on to Africa to sing for a funeral for a dear friend in Eritrea

If your Dad was a legal green card holder, she doesn't mean you and your family. She's talking about the undocumented ones.

I know I was cautious at first because my spouse is a naturalized citizen and I figure 45 will go after them too because of "chain migration" which is his whole freaking family.

....the last time in 2009.

Initially it applied to anyone born after 1947, granting citizenship to people born outside the country with at least one Canadian parent.

I was born in in NYC in 1948. I never bothered to look into all the changes over the years since they didn't affect me. The curious thing is that I'm one of six, two were born before 1947 so they are not Canadian citizens, four of us were born after 1947 and are Canadian citizens.

Now here's an interesting family twist - my mother was born in Ontario, my grandparents moved to NYC when she was a little girl. While in NYC my grandparents had another son and daughter, who were "birthright" immigrants. Years later they all moved back to Toronto to settle for good, but my mother, being 18 and settled in, stayed in NYC. So she was living in the US and was Canadian, her two younger siblings wound up living in Canada the rest of their lives (one is still alive) and are US citizens. My mother became a naturalized US citizen in the 1960s.

I only heard about the law a few years ago, looked into applying for my Certificate of Citizenship, but at the time being in my late 60s it was too involved for what little benefit it was, so didn't bother. Had I known about this when I was in my 40s or younger I would have followed through. Who knows, there would have been a good chance of moving up there decades ago!

Here's a good summary of the law and it's changes over the years.

You need a certified copy of your Canadian-born parent birth certificate (obtainable by mail from the LOVELY people at the Ontario Archives. $22. ) It is very swift process.

Also a certified copy of your own birth certificate.

A photo ID photocopy

A passport quality photo.

You fill out the questionnaire. I'll send you the link if you wish.

Mail to Ottowa with $75.

Bingo. They send you the certificate of citizenship.

Then you also could get a Canadian passport if you want.

I believe that enough millions of voting citizens will effectively restrain this xenophobia, counter the compounded lies and put old Grandpa toothless's choice for a nation's leader back in the angry Fox led box this debacle of a pResidency has been all along.
Because if it doesn't by the next two election cycles, millions of us will be accompanying you as immigrants to leave this land to the well armed nutjob haters and xenophobes. It will mean our democracy has been sold to the most hateful, greedy bidders and there soon after be nothing left to immigrate or remain here for.
Keep the faith brother. There are enough voters with enough brain cells left to stop this insanity.

Wed Oct 31, 2018, 08:44 PM
Oct 2018

Being named a common surname, my 3rd gr grandfather who was a double agent of some kind was held first by the British and then by the Patriots (Canadians call them Rebels, of course). He was imprisoned in shackles on both a frigate in the North River and also by the other side. He was ordered to leave NY within two days or be hanged. He went home to settle his family and his 1,113 acres and sawmill -- forced to abandon the properties. When the militia came back his wife lied, saying he had gone. BUT....she had nailed him into a pine box with a jug of milk for sustenance and he was there in the house, ready to be loaded on the wagon that would transport her through the lines. That's how he fled. Leaving worldly goods behind. He had been witnessed helping a Tory neighbor's family; that was his offense. So the family went to Canada, settling as the first white settlers in an area called Long Point Ontario. That was 1775. In 1932, my grandfather emigrated to the States, returning with his wife and grown children to the U.S. after trying the art of "dry farming" on a Saskatchewan homestead.

So....Canada provided refuge for my family once. And I am grateful for that.

To fully appreciate the individual situations that lead to expatriation.
My own possible expatriation would be unprecedented in my line, 6th generation son of 1800's Oregon settlers, who moved back to the midwest when more of the family came from England. I must admit my actual choice at retirement age may be south of the border, possibly far south, hopefully teaching English for food and a bed, share my retirement SSI.
Unless the Republicans legislatively steal that too.
This election, I believe stands as litmus test and harbinger of salvation for both of us. I lost everything to a 2012 pre-ACA health disaster, severe trauma requiring a baker's dozen surgeries to correct. I continue to work, but it's hard with some physical limitations. At 62 I'm done, and if these idiotic tarriffs cause runaway inflation as predicted, it's what is likely to make the U.S. a place to leave behind for many of us.
Canada's climate is a bit cold for my bones.
Because living at the rest stops and desert camps in an RV starving on dollar store canned food doesn't appeal to me.
But thanks to pre-ACA "pre-existing conditions" exemptions that took every last retirement dollar I had, till I recovered from my care credit debt, I'll never be able to stop working till I'm dead.
Yo hablo espanol e eu falo poco portugues. Might as well make use of it either somewhere near the border where I'll start or beyond.

Richard Rich has just run off, and it is certain that he is going to inform on Sir Thomas More to More's political enemies.

Lady Alice (More's wife): Arrest him!

More: Why, what has he done?

Margaret (More's daughter): He's bad!

More: There is no law against that.

Will Roper (More's son-in-law): There is! God's law!

More: Then God can arrest him.

Lady Alice: While you talk, he's gone!

More: And go he should, if he was the Devil himself, until he broke the law!

Roper: So now you'd give the Devil benefit of law!

More: Yes. What would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil?

Roper: I'd cut down every law in England to do that!

More: Oh? And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned 'round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country's planted thick with laws from coast to coast- man's laws, not God's -- and if you cut them down -- and you're just the man to do it -- do you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I'd give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake.
