Andrew Gillum: Trump Has Provided 'Cover' for Racists

Last week in a debate, Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum (D) called out his opponent, Rep. Ron DeSantis (R) in a viral moment — saying that, while won’t label DeSantis a racist, he feels “racists believe he’s a racist.” Now, the Democratic candidate is making a similar argument about President Donald Trump.

Appearing on CNN’s New Day Thursday, Gillum — the mayor of Tallahassee — was asked by anchor John Berman if he believes Trump is sending a “racist or racial” message to Florida voters by labeling him a “thief.”

“I have not called the president a racist,” Gillum said. “But there are racists in his sympathizers who believe that he may be. Which is why they go to his aid. Which is why he has provided them cover. And I believe his cover has led to much of the degradation in our political discourse.”

Gillum added, “The kind of politics, the tone that we’re seeing right now set nationally and that has seeped into the race here in Florida from day one of this general election is beneath the station of the office, and it’s beneath the intelligence of the voters who were trying to engage in this race and act on their behalf.”
