The lawyer representing a Christian woman (in Pakistan) acquitted of blasphemy...

...after eight years on death row has fled Pakistan in fear for his life.
...

The trial stems from an argument Ms Bibi, whose full name is Asia Noreen, had with a group of women in June 2009.

They were harvesting fruit when a row broke out about a bucket of water. The women said that because she had used a cup, they could no longer touch it, as her faith had made it unclean.

Hard-line politicians have often backed severe punishments, partly as a way of shoring up their support base.

But critics say the laws have often been used to get revenge after personal disputes, and that convictions are based on thin evidence.

Asia Bibi’s husband pleads for family asylum in UK after blasphemy acquittal

Pakistan government accused of signing death warrant by blocking Christian woman from leaving the country

The husband of a Pakistani Christian woman acquitted on charges of blasphemy has begged Theresa May to grant his wife and their family asylum in the UK.

In a video message seen by the Observer, Asia Bibi’s husband, Ashiq Masih called on the British prime minister to “help us exit from Pakistan” where thousands of people have protested against the supreme court’s ruling and demanded that she be punished.

The plea came a day after Imran Khan’s government announced it would try to prevent Bibi from leaving the country, which her supporters likened to “signing her death warrant”.

Bibi, a farm labourer, spent eight years on death row after being falsely accused of insulting the prophet Muhammad. This followed a row after she had sipped water from the same cup as a Muslim. On Saturday her lawyer, Saif-ul-Malook, said he had fled Pakistan in fear of his life.

All protesters arrested since Asia Bibi's acquittal will be released, and any violence towards them will be investigated.

The government will also start legal proceedings to put Ms Bibi on a list which would ban her from leaving Pakistan.

Translation: Anyone arrested for for protesting the acquittal gets a 'get of jail free' card. (I infer protesting the acquittal of a defendant accused of blasphemy against the state religion would have to include some measure of violence.) However, violence toward those released will not be tolerated. Further, since Ms Bibi may never be allowed to leave the country, she (and possibly any sympathetic family members) may be killed by some renegade lynch mob. IMHO, renegade lynch mobs tend to act more efficiently (that is much faster unhindered by any due process requirements) than any justice system.

Gambling isn't allowed in Pakistan but I think if it was, bookmakers would be giving odds in favor of her murder.
