3 Girl Scouts, 1 adult killed in hit-and-run while picking up trash on road

LAKE HALLIE, Wis. — A pickup truck lurched off a road in western Wisconsin Saturday and hit a group of Girl Scouts picking up trash in a ditch, leaving three girls and one adult dead, police said. A fourth girl was critically injured.

Sgt. Daniel Sokup of the Lake Hallie Police Department said the driver of the black Ford F-150 pickup truck fled the scene but later turned himself in. He identified the driver as Colton Treu, 21, of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin.

Sokup said Treu will be charged with four counts of homicide through the negligent use of a vehicle. Sokup said the crash happened before a hill and there were no blind spots.

"The area is not an unsafe area," he said. Sokup said it was not immediately known if there were other factors that might have led the driver to leave the road.

Now I don't eat meat buts if he's hunting deer for food, I'll separate that from his lousy driving.

9. I think it's disgusting to post pictures of an animal he's killed

If he’s going to eat it, then he should just eat it and not show off about it. Does anyone post pictures of themselves with a package of ground beef they bought at the grocery store? No. I think it’s sick to post a picture of an eviscerated animal.

Having said that, good for him for turning himself in. It’s a terrible situation all around. Just so awful. Those girls and that mom were just being good people doing a good deed.

Shows he was not watching where he was going. He took four lives. The
other scout is in critical condition. All because of his inattentiveness.

13. I have heard he and his passenger admitted to huffing just prior.

I didn't see what they were huffing - paint, glue, some other chemical. A friend of mine has friends up there who know the mother and daughter that were killed (they all know each other through scouting). I have not seen it reported on an official site but that's what they are saying.

edit to add - they are reporting it locally now: "On Saturday November 3, 2018 at 4:33pm Colten R Treu (age 21) of Chippewa Falls turned himself in to Officers from the City of Chippewa Falls Police. The passenger in the truck turned himself in to the City of Eau Claire Police at 3:54pm on the same day. Both subjects gave statements to police which included that they had been intentionally inhaling chemical vapors which is commonly called “Huffing”, just prior to the accident."
