Here's the tweet :

I interviewed @DanCrenshawTX for a piece on vets running. I enjoyed our conversation and as an American I am incredibly grateful for his service and his sacrifice. Our country is better off with more people like him in Congress, party aside.

Kind of odd for a reporter to endorse someone 2 days before the election...
@kasie
Replying to @ParkerMolloy
Im not endorsing any candidate. I AM saying thanks for serving and saying I think more veterans in Congress is good for our country. If you disagree, we can agree to disagree.
@ParkerMalloy I mean, his opponent in this race isnt a veteran, so...
@kasie
Replying to @ParkerMolloy
I understand that. Im not urging voters to pick him over his opponent. I am saying he should not be mocked for his service and that I personally appreciate that he sacrificed for all of us.

Then, all due respect, that's what you should have said, instead of telling us that Congress will be "better off" with another anti-choice Tea Party stalwart.

I should have referenced the context in the original tweet for those who may not have seen the clip in question. Apologies.

The answer to this situation is not for reporters to endorse congressional candidates. Really surprising.
@kasie
Replying to @neeratanden @CharlesPPierce @ParkerMolloy
Hi Neera, I respect your work and Im hoping you saw the fuller context in this whole thread. When I said like him I was directly referring to his record of service, as I noted party aside. Id say the same for a Dem in a similar spot.

Oh. Okay. Well, "party aside," I prefer a candidate who doesn't support homophobia under the guise of religious liberty, supports reproductive choice, and isn't yet another spokesman for the NRA. But yay vets no matter what they think or stand for?

What you're really selling here is the idea that voters ought to be paying less attention to issues and more to biography and personal narrative, an approach that has done a great deal to dumb down politics over the years. I don't know what you're thinking with this

Valuing service from our veterans is very different from saying we need more people like a specific GOP veteran in Congress. How many times have we heard "We need more people like..." at a candidate's rally? You have to know that reads as an endorsement.
It's not the first time she's been called out. I posted this from last month when she got jumped on by Norm Ornstein for her both sides is the sameism. https://www.democraticunderground.com/100211251065

(6,973 posts)Yeah, I saw way too much of her unfortunately during 2016 when I was watching MSNBC during the GE 🙄
I remember there being so many good news people back in the day. But now-a-days, these corporate male & female bobble-head news anchor hacks are so crappy with their shows and with their "But both sides do it" Crap. Whether it be Hunt, or Todd or Kornwhacky, they SUCK. Check that, let me throw in "seasoned" news hack Mrs. "But here emails" Greenspan. I haven't watched her post 2016, but friends who can stomach watching her tell me and I'm pretty sure that she hasn't and won't incessantly mention treasonous-fatso-in-chief using his OLD iphone to gab away on which is a security risk has she? Has she CONSTANTLY mentioned that the Chinese et al listen in on him? Yeah, NO. She went on famously about Hillary's emails to the point of it being vomit-inducing 🤮, yet there more than likely has been nothing about anyone else in this most corrupt administration in history doing WORSE things than Hillary EVER did. I mean fatso-in-chief nor his corrupt and treasonous kids couldn't pass a security clearance, yet Mrs. Greenspan went on and on about Hillary and her emails 🙄
Although she wasn't a 'news anchor,' I sure as hell miss thee so much:
When politicians start talking about large groups of their fellow Americans as 'enemies,' it's time for a quiet stir of alertness. Polarizing people is a good way to win an election, and also a good way to wreck a country.

(27,794 posts)I'm very tired of people refusing to talk issues - it's this whole idea that a candidate who holds big rallies is better than a candidate who gets out on the ground and talks to voters and holds smaller events. The media prefers the big rallies.

(194 posts)simce VanSusteran laid a rotten egg with her FoxNews attitudes. Most of the younger MSNBC folks are not representative of their own generation, which is largely progressive, because this MSMBC lot are careerists who stand for nothing, not even the truth, but their own phoney public relations image. You know, the Chuck Todd model for scrambling up the greasy corporate media pole.

(7,358 posts)And by ''nationalism'' I mean this overly zealous patriotism that RWers seem to have as a litmus test for their candidates. You can be a good, patriotic citizen and not have been in the U.S. armed services. People from all walks of life put their life on the line for others every day. Crenshaw's service is honorable, but his ideology is not.

(57 posts)You're saying he should not be mocked for his service...
Now that's a sentiment we can all get behind. Precisely who is it that has mocked his service to the country? I've heard his neanderthal views mocked, but never have I heard him ridiculed for having worn the uniform or served in the military. Tell us, who is doing all this mocking?

(4,792 posts)... where you have a back and forth exchange. People can sense the context or at least ask for clarification. On social media platforms such as Twitter, such stand alone comments rightfully draw fire. Twitter is no friend to nuance or gray zones.
I don't follow anyone's Twitter account, but seem to see this play out on DU and elsewhere regularly.
This is one of those times when I suggest journalists suppress the reflex to opine needlessly.

I turned it off. Fu*k that $hit. Ronnie started the racism crap and running up the deficit with his damn tax cuts for the rich. The orange one is the logical outcome of what started with Ronnie almost 40 years ago.

(25,771 posts)but SOMEONE in the news media needs to point out that there are many ways to "serve."
I was not in the military. I proudly protested the war in Vietnam and more recent conflicts. I took college deferments to finish (thoughP went through 1 semester after getting a relatively low number in the lottery without a deferrment) in my last semester I sugned up for a Navy Flight program, but did not make it through my physical due to an injury ... ironically, during college I had an open reduction due to a broken leg and dislocated ankle)
having been basically shut out of the military ... though after law school I did try, unsucsessfully, to get into Army and Navy JAG ...
My subsequent career was nostly public service oriented, often with state programs such as LIHEAP and mental health or non-profit ... the rest of my career was as a stay at home dad / househusband taking care of 2 kids while my wife either worked as Congressional Staff, running state energy efficiency programs or non-profit .... in addition, we returned to graduate school in political science and each taught college government for community college or state university ....
No one walks up to either of us in the mall to thank us for our service to the poor, mentally ill, or colleges - except former students - and yet little miss priss wants to say on national TV that we need more vets no matter their background or policy or values beyond that military service. Vets like Generals Petraeus and Flynn, and the Congressman who is the subject of this particular Twitter discussion.
Service and Values are EACH important.
BTW, my dad was a rural doctor and Navy Vet ... mom was a social worker and a Red Cross director both in India and Burma in WWII and subsequently at a Veterans Hospital after the war where she met and married a Navy doctor.
