9. Been going door to door before elections since 1964
While I was in high school and too young to vote, I started by going door to door in Teaneck, NJ, registering people to vote on behalf of the Bergen County Democratic Party. My best friend's Dad was our town's (Bergenfield, NJ) Democratic Municipal Chairman and thought it would be a good experience for his son and I. We worked at it for about 4 weeks. As a reward we got to stand up front at the rope line when LBJ helicoptered into the Bergen Mall for a rally that fall. I remember the first new voter I ever got to fill out a voter registration form - a black woman from the east side of Teaneck named Mamie Laughinghouse.
Ever since I have been working for my local Democratic organization to get out the vote every year, sometimes as a candidated (elected to Council in Dumont, NJ), as Campaign Chair or committee member for other candiates and for the past several years as just a volunteer. I believe that calling and door knocking really works. When I started our town had a Republican Mayor and 6 Republican Council members, with no Democrats on the local council. When I got elected (on my second try) I was the sole Democrat on the Council. Today the Council has a Democratic Mayor and 4 of the 6 Council members are Democrats. We work every year to get our votes out with calls and door knocking and sometimes we only win (or lose) by a few votes. In one election we won by 2 votes (out of 9,000 registered voters) and another I remember we lost by 1 vote. So I have long realized the importance of GOTV and urge anyone who can to get involved. That one more phone call, one more knock at a door, it sure can make a difference. |
