I wish the hosts in Sirius XM did a better job explaining the issues to their listeners

I listen to Sirius XM Progress during my drive to and from work. Yesterday I was listening to Mark Thompson, and I was really bothered at how ineffective he was at arguing the Democratic positions.

A person called in from Florida, and it seemed to me that he normally voted for Republicans, but was seriously considering voting for Democrats this time around. He sounded like he didn't make a lot of money and also had some health issues, which is exactly the type of person we can peel away. This caller made two statements that Mark should have been prepared to counter. He said that he didn't want his taxes to go up, and that the ACA didn't matter for him because "he didn't qualify for it".

Rhetorically, this was a ball right over the middle of the plate, except that Mark completely whiffed at it.

Regarding taxes, he should have mentioned that the tax cut that was passed by only republicans, has the middle class taxes expiring, so in a few years his taxes will go up while the tax cuts for the wealthy are permanent.

As for the ACA and not qualifying, it should have been pointed out that the subsidies are only one small part of the ACA. He should have mentioned the protections for pre-existing conditions. Or the prohibition of junk policies. Or the requirement that a minimum level of money must go to providing care. Or mention that it has been the Republicans who have been sabotaging the ACA causing rates to increase and costs to go up. All ofthese thing did affect him, and would get worse if the ACA were to be repealed.

right wing, and are 90% of the airwaves on terrestrial talk radio blanketed by right wing hate radio.

Also, based on the OPs description of the caller, this caller didn't want to be convinced, and I suspect the caller's narrative was less than honest. The bottom line is the callers response is republican ideology. Selfish

Like you I listen to the music channels when driving.

I've heard a lot of right wing trolls on his program. This caller was not like them. Please don't take me for a dupe. The trolls are easy to spot. This caller brought up legitimate concerns that I believe most voters care about, and sounded sincere, just misinformed. I just wish the host did a better job of informing him of how the Democrats would be better, becuase then that information would have gotten out to all of the other listeners that didn't call in.
