(315 posts)Can't understand it. They don't make any significant money and have no real reason to vote R since our family was always blue collar and relied on some social services to get through some tough times.

(11,690 posts)We know why rich people vote for Republicans and for those purposes, it makes sense. Less taxes means more money to spend or invest for them. Less services doesn't really affect them to a certain point.
For people who do not fit the Republican core demographic it is more about a sense of grievance and self righteousness. I too have family members who are not rich, and who have benefited from the same public services that they want to take away from others. When I was young, I was able to use AIM a program in California to get health insurance for pre-natal and infant care for low income people. I was in school and was working, but did not make much money. I was thankful for the service and would NEVER want to keep others from using services like that even though I dislike paying taxes. Republicans seem to have a way of switching from using services to thinking that anyone else who is using that same service is somehow trying to take advantage of the system. They live in fear and anger that somehow, somewhere there is some unworthy person getting help.
