Dems were expected to take House, nothing more. Calm the fuck down

So many Debby downers here. If you don’t get it all, even the stuff you weren’t expected to get, you go off the deep end.

You guys making a House win look like a horrible loss. Talk about detached from reality.

Show me where exactly this evidence is that dems were supposed to do more than take the House?

All elections are local, in case you forgot that. None of this is a referendum on Trump. It never was.

Here in New Mexico we are probably going to replace a republican governor with a democratic one. That’s what matters most to me. And I’m sure everyone around the country views these things the same.

Who knows what will happen in the next two years and Republicans should have a lot more competitive races than Democrats. tRump will also be up for reelection, which is why I said, if he wins, the Senate will likely remain ... if he loses, it's quite possible a number of the competitive seats will flip.

For one thing they already had the majority we didn't and our hole has gotten deeper. Only 3 or 4 of those races will we be favorites in 2020 and I'm counting 2 of those in states that are still red Arizona and North Carolina. Out of what's left of what we could possibly win there is Georgia,Texas,South Carolina and Kentucky. We will be underdogs in all those races and heavy underdogs in Kentucky. What happened in the Senate last night was a disaster if Nelson doesn't win a recount or if Tester or Sinema lose then we are looking to at least 2022 before taking back the senate.

but seeing a strong, solid, progressive candidate like Gillum lose in Florida to a weak, ridiculous candidate like DeSantis does not bode well for 2020 in Florida. It's trending more and more red IMO, not less.

Yeah, I'm satisfied if we pull off the House, but not seeing a blue wave and seeing real, progressive folks lose to bad candidates in important states is a big deal and disappointing. I expected us to lose a few of the Senate seats but now it's looking like not only are we losing just about all of the red ones save WV and probably MT, but we may only pick up one.

So don't spin this as even a good night for Dems...at best it will be a minimally acceptable night, and even that's not fully guaranteed IMO yet.

..with this much momentum...and this many great candidates with excitement around them.......in a midterm election that usually favors the party out of power. That's a depressing thing no matter which way you cut it.

I do hope we win at the state level, that is something I'll be happy about.

I'm also happy hearing about a lot of progressive prosecutors winning in places around the country (Thanks to Shaun King for making me aware of that as an important office that I never really considered before when thinking about social justice!)

So yeah, no need to be completely down (assuming we win the house) but let's also not think that we should be doing MUCH better.

Although I do hope this finally puts the nail in the coffin of the idea that large early voting numbers mean ANYTHING for Dems. I feel like every single election we have to hear the same refrain and cheers that "Early voting is through the roof!! It's breaking records!!!!" only to find on election night that it means nothing to the final results as far as being favorable to Dems.

36. meh. Freak out if you want to freak out.
Tue Nov 6, 2018, 10:50 PM
Nov 2018

Nothing anyone does right now is going to have any effect on the results.

In the final analysis it looks like this will be a good election. Not quite the great one that plenty of people were hoping for in their secret (and not so secret) dreams, but something worth feeling positive about and building from.

But as those long-shot dreams for the senate fade, as realistic optimism about florida and georgia and texas teeters on the brink, it's perfectly natural that some folks are going to freak out. So be it. Freak out. Do what you gotta do. Be happy be sad be pissed whatever.

Then wake up tomorrow and get to work on 2020, because we've got plenty to work for and plenty of work to do.

disturbing is that given the other side, it just shouldn’t be this hard. So we get the House. OK, so that allows us to stop bad stuff. But it’s still a red country. And worse, a lunatic red country. Their biggest fear is a bunch of desperate Hondurans who have to walk hundreds of miles to the border. They believe the most blatant propaganda. Every horrible thing their leader does and says they look the other way because he’s got something for them that outweighs all that. WHAT? Where does it end?

it really should have been a blue wave. When you look at the horrible, horrible excuse for a human being we have as president, the spineless, gutless enablers in congress, and all of his felon cabinet members you would think that a rational thinking electorate would be tired of the shit show we've had this last couple of years. I guess I am more disgusted with the voters for either not seeing it, loving the racism hate & lying, enjoying the cruel, heartless policies or just being totally stupid. It really is a sad indictment of the USA. Don't get me wrong, taking the house would be great, but it should have been a blue wave.

People have every right to be unhappy about certain results, especially if it directly effects them. To accuse of them of being debbie downers shows a decided lack of respect for them and their situations

because it will serve as a check on Orangehole McTinydick and his mob of congressional orcs. There will be subpoenas and investigations, and the GOP's anti-human, evil legislation will be DOA even if we don't have the Senate. There will be gridlock, of course, but that's far better than the GOP's Steamroller of Legislative Death. I'd have despaired if we'd lost the House. I'm disappointed in some other results but with the House in Dem control we can save democracy and keep the movement alive. The Dems who lost tonight aren't going away, either.

There were tremendous inroads made in Florida, Georgia and Texas. All three states are prime picking for Democrats in the future, especially Florida where over 1 million new voters - mostly people of color - will now be able to vote again. Getting them to vote will be the next item to check off of our list.

I never really thought we had a chance at the Senate. It was a very uphill battle all the way, and our real chance to take control of the Senate will come in the next 4 years. And don't forget the presidency. Trump WILL be defeated in 2020!

Democrats made tremendous progress in state Houses and Governor-ships. These are crucial to stop GOP gerrymandering and in the next elections we won't have to defeat Republicans by 5 times the number of votes we really need.

Take a break, enjoy our victories, then tomorrow morning get back to work. There is the peoples' business to do!

Furthermore, it was a MIRACLE that Beto got so close in such a deep red state as Texas. I'm disappointed Dems didn't win the senate, yes. And REALLY disappointed that Beto wasn't declared the winner for Ted Cruz's Senate seat. But Beto's hard work and all the support he received from volunteers has done something amazing in this state. Texas did get a blue wave. It just hasn't reached the shore yet.

I had no hope of us winning back the senate and cautious optimism about taking the house. Having a chance to grab a senate seat or two in AZ, TN, or TX would've been nice, but losing them in ND, MO, IN, and FL is devastating so don't try convincing me to calm down. To make matters worse, Manchin is a DINO anyways so having him retain his seat is nothing to cheer about.

Repugs controlled most of the levers of power, and used it to rig the entire voting process at all levels to try to perpetuate their power. Yet we were able to take back the House and put ourselves in a position to demand accountability and decency. This is just the beginning. The work begins for 2020, and we now have a much clearer picture of how the minority votes managed to be translated into majority power by the Repugs. We are going to persevere, and we are going to win - again.

7) Prop. in Florida to give felons who have served sentences back their voting rights passes.

Hey, we couldn't get everything. But we got some very good things. The House win lets us get rid of the gerrymandering. The prop. in Florida will very likely favor Dems.

I would have like to have seen the Democratic Party take a different tack after the 2016 election, that is, being more proactive in developing new party leadership, more support for progressive candidates and a greater investment in creating a truly national effort in bringing about a "registration wave", to counter rePub voter suppression / election rigging. That being said, flipping the House with the economy doing so well on many metrics (thanks President Obama!) is quite the accomplishment. It's easy to overlook this point. It will make so much difference to how we move forward as Democrats and as a nation. As I told a Canadian friend last night, the United States dodged a bullet by taking back the House ....
