So many Debby downers here. If you dont get it all, even the stuff you werent expected to get, you go off the deep end.
You guys making a House win look like a horrible loss. Talk about detached from reality.
Show me where exactly this evidence is that dems were supposed to do more than take the House?
All elections are local, in case you forgot that. None of this is a referendum on Trump. It never was.
Here in New Mexico we are probably going to replace a republican governor with a democratic one. Thats what matters most to me. And Im sure everyone around the country views these things the same.

(3,473 posts)And the Republicans have a lot more seats that will be competitive to hold. The same goes in 2022. My guess would be, if the Democrats take the WH, they have a good chance to flip the Senate ... if they don't, then it will more likely state Republican.

SFnomad
(3,473 posts)Who knows what will happen in the next two years and Republicans should have a lot more competitive races than Democrats. tRump will also be up for reelection, which is why I said, if he wins, the Senate will likely remain ... if he loses, it's quite possible a number of the competitive seats will flip.
It's far too early at this point to be a Debbie Downer.
standingtall
(2,785 posts)For one thing they already had the majority we didn't and our hole has gotten deeper. Only 3 or 4 of those races will we be favorites in 2020 and I'm counting 2 of those in states that are still red Arizona and North Carolina. Out of what's left of what we could possibly win there is Georgia,Texas,South Carolina and Kentucky. We will be underdogs in all those races and heavy underdogs in Kentucky. What happened in the Senate last night was a disaster if Nelson doesn't win a recount or if Tester or Sinema lose then we are looking to at least 2022 before taking back the senate.

(7,447 posts)but seeing a strong, solid, progressive candidate like Gillum lose in Florida to a weak, ridiculous candidate like DeSantis does not bode well for 2020 in Florida. It's trending more and more red IMO, not less.
Yeah, I'm satisfied if we pull off the House, but not seeing a blue wave and seeing real, progressive folks lose to bad candidates in important states is a big deal and disappointing. I expected us to lose a few of the Senate seats but now it's looking like not only are we losing just about all of the red ones save WV and probably MT, but we may only pick up one.
So don't spin this as even a good night for Dems...at best it will be a minimally acceptable night, and even that's not fully guaranteed IMO yet.

(13,305 posts)..with this much momentum...and this many great candidates with excitement around them.......in a midterm election that usually favors the party out of power. That's a depressing thing no matter which way you cut it.
I do hope we win at the state level, that is something I'll be happy about.
I'm also happy hearing about a lot of progressive prosecutors winning in places around the country (Thanks to Shaun King for making me aware of that as an important office that I never really considered before when thinking about social justice!)
So yeah, no need to be completely down (assuming we win the house) but let's also not think that we should be doing MUCH better.
Although I do hope this finally puts the nail in the coffin of the idea that large early voting numbers mean ANYTHING for Dems. I feel like every single election we have to hear the same refrain and cheers that "Early voting is through the roof!! It's breaking records!!!!" only to find on election night that it means nothing to the final results as far as being favorable to Dems.

In the final analysis it looks like this will be a good election. Not quite the great one that plenty of people were hoping for in their secret (and not so secret) dreams, but something worth feeling positive about and building from.
But as those long-shot dreams for the senate fade, as realistic optimism about florida and georgia and texas teeters on the brink, it's perfectly natural that some folks are going to freak out. So be it. Freak out. Do what you gotta do. Be happy be sad be pissed whatever.
Then wake up tomorrow and get to work on 2020, because we've got plenty to work for and plenty of work to do.

There will be subpoenas and investigations, and the GOP's anti-human, evil legislation will be DOA even if we don't have the Senate. (19,192 posts)There were tremendous inroads made in Florida, Georgia and Texas. All three states are prime picking for Democrats in the future, especially Florida where over 1 million new voters - mostly people of color - will now be able to vote again. Getting them to vote will be the next item to check off of our list.
I never really thought we had a chance at the Senate. It was a very uphill battle all the way, and our real chance to take control of the Senate will come in the next 4 years. And don't forget the presidency. Trump WILL be defeated in 2020!
Democrats made tremendous progress in state Houses and Governor-ships. These are crucial to stop GOP gerrymandering and in the next elections we won't have to defeat Republicans by 5 times the number of votes we really need.
Take a break, enjoy our victories, then tomorrow morning get back to work. There is the peoples' business to do!

Yet we were able to take back the House and put ourselves in a position to demand accountability and decency. This is just the beginning. (22 posts)I would have like to have seen the Democratic Party take a different tack after the 2016 election, that is, being more proactive in developing new party leadership, more support for progressive candidates and a greater investment in creating a truly national effort in bringing about a "registration wave", to counter rePub voter suppression / election rigging. That being said, flipping the House with the economy doing so well on many metrics (thanks President Obama!) is quite the accomplishment. It's easy to overlook this point.
