Michigan had a blue wave tonight and transformed our state forever

Last edited Wed Nov 7, 2018, 12:32 AM - Edit history (1)

Whitmer and the other wins are great. But the 3 ballot proposals are a bigger deal.

Proposal 1- legal recreational weed. extremely liberal policy, the most free in the country.

Proposal 2- Re-dictricting by a non partisan panel, Gerrymandering is over. This will flip the state blue for a long time

Proposal 3- Ease of voting, automatic registration, same day registration and a host of other things.

This state took a huge leap forward, and we needed the Dem governor to enforce the new laws. My state will never be the same.

We tried to get the same proposal on the ballot in PA, but it's very hard as a ballot initiative has to pass 2 consecutive sessions in the state legislature. We got year 1, but Rs sabotaged the bill and it did not pass for the 2nd time.

At least we'll have Gov Wolf in place so the Rs won't be able to jam an new gerrymander through.

Wed Nov 7, 2018, 10:26 AM
Nov 2018

Expected to be early December. All the rest will take effect after all the regulations have been worked out by the legislature, we do have a leg up as medical cannabis is already in place. It could take as long as until 2020. That’s for buying and selling recreational.

From the Detroit Free Press,

Ten days after the election results are certified, which should be by early December. But marijuana won’t be commercially available for sale until probably early 2020, in part because the state must still put regulations in place and issue licenses for recreational sales. “It’s not going to be an earth-shattering change,” said Jeffrey Hank, the East Lansing attorney who was one of the leaders of the effort to get the legalization question on the ballot. But after certification, “adults will no longer be arrested for simple possession and use of marijuana.”

-snip-

The ballot proposal calls for the state Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs to take up to a year to develop the rules and regulations that will govern the recreational marijuana industry in the state before it begins accepting applications for recreational licenses. "Our licensing and regulatory infrastructure for medical marijuana can be scaled up to incorporate the oversight of adult-use marijuana," said Shelly Edgerton, director of LARA. "We intend to offer more details regarding the commercial production and distribution of marijuana for adult use after the Michigan Board of Canvassers certifies the election results."

Michigan is a large state. If you really want remote, try the UP, which in Michigan is short for the Upper Peninsula. Of course you know we're surrounded by water and have many, many inland lakes of all sizes. Camping is big here. The western part of the lower peninsula, along Lake Michigan is gorgeous. There's just too much to tell you about. Maybe get yourself some visitor guides. Familiarize yourself with the layout of the state from a map. Then you can always message me with questions or anyone on the Michigan Forum on DU.

Her race is still technically too close to call, but she’s 2 points up with 94% counted.

I was so nervous last night I couldn't look-we had a media blackout until this morning.

So glad Gretchen and Winnie and Rachel won. And one of only two Muslim women in congress!!!!

And yeah, recreational pot and trying to fix the horrible gerrymandering in this state. I kind of figured Justin Amash would
ein re-election. I liked Carol but Amash-who let us not forget is a tea partier-steps away from trump just enough to pretend he's independent. Plus, a large part of his district is in rural areas, even though he also has part of the city of Grand Rapids.

I was really worried about Debbie, when it seemed like Bill Schuette was going to lose, DeVos and the Koch brothers shifted their money to John James. I think if the election had gone on another few weeks, he might have won. Unfortunately, Gary
Peters is up in 2020 and look to see John James going against him, he's ambitious.

Red as red gets, save for Sherrod Brown. The situation almost seems hopeless down here, unless something more dramatic changes in our demographics, or we find the rare candidate with cross-appeal.

At least not all of the Midwest is lost.

He wrote on Facebook, “Real God country family Michiganiacs are heartbroke that more of us want the once great state of Michigan to turn into a California s***hole,” he wrote. “Downright insane cultural suicide. Thanks for nothing a**holes.”

Sir, you don't need to insult my beloved Golden State to express your displeasure.

Yes, the Left was fired up for this election but from experience they will become complacent and less vigilant and then Republicans, who tend to vote like it's their duty and who tend to be pragmatic in general elections and don't need the perfect candidate will wait for that to happen and will be back.

The 3 ballot proposals are cemented into law now and would take 3/4s majority in the State Legislature to change.

Don’t mistake voter suppression for complacent.

Realize this, Dems and liberal ideas are preferred by a solid majority. Reps only have power at all because they rig districts and stop people from voting. Rigged districts will be gone in MI, and voting will never be easier.
