Clerk who refused to sign gay marriage licenses voted out in Kentucky

Kim Davis, the county clerk in Kentucky who famously refused to sign marriage licenses for gay couples, has been voted out of office, the Lexington Herald Leader reported Tuesday night.

In 2015, Davis was sent to jail for five days after refusing to sign marriage licenses for gay couples. A Republican, Davis lost to Democratic challenger Elwood Caudill Jr. by about 700 votes in Tuesday's election.

Davis was elected clerk in Rowan County, Kentucky in 2014. She originally ran for office as a Democrat. She succeeded her mother in the county clerk role.

“I believe that as a community we must continue to work together toward a more prosperous and cohesive Rowan County,” Caudill said after his victory, per the Herald Leader.
