I'm going to be represented by a Democrat in Congress! I grew up in a reliably democratic district and took it for granted that democrats always won-until I moved. For the last 30 years I was in the middle of a solidly republican district that was configured to be a safe seat for the GOP. Not anymore folks! New Jersey's congressional districts were drawn by a bi-partisan commission during the Christie administration to have 6 Democratic seats and 6 Republican seats. As of now NJ's delegation is 10-2 in favor of the democrats. Three "safe" republican seats flipped. A fourth, that I didn't think would ever see a democrat within spitting distance hasn't been called as of this morning. That's how close the state is to going 11-1. This is a big deal-but then again we know Trump here in NJ better than most.
Looking nationally, 229 seats in Congress is a pretty healthy majority that brings control of the committees, the agenda and the budget. There's a democrat elected to Congress in Oklahoma of all places. Kansas has a democratic governor and democrats took back the only seat they've held in recent history from Yoder. New Gingrich's old seat is going democratic. Goodbye Dana Rohrabacher. Adios Steve Sessions. Sayonyara Dean Heller. Don't let the screen door hit you Scott Walker. A lot of good came out of last night.
When things are looking bleak you want everything to get better right away. Things don't work like that. The economy is reasonably good. Partisan gerrymandering is an incredible burden to overcome. The rural/urban-suburban divide is troubling. There's a lot of obstacles out there. But the number of votes cast across the board significantly favored democrats. Serious inroads were made. Right foot-left foot, keep marching in the right direction. At the end of the day, Trump is still there, albeit seriously de-fanged, to remind us to keep pushing. We didn't get into this mess in one election cycle and one election cycle wasn't going to get us out of it-but we made a lot of progress. Things are about to get seriously interesting in Washington. Meanwhile, I'm still trying to get my head around the fact that my republican district just sent a Democrat to represent us in DC. Hallelujah.

(1,896 posts)I didn't spend 30 years in the desert like you but I always pretended that Frank Pallone was still my congressman. Now it's see you later Leonard and I have an actual democratic congressman again.

(2,419 posts)or Hunterdon Counties, you might as well be living in Kansas for all the chances that Democrats have around here. Yeah, there's been democrats running and winning as republicans in local races forever, but when it comes to state and national elections, it's been slim pickings. I had a feeling Malinowski was going to win. I spend a lot of time out in the hinterlands and talked to a lot of hardcore republicans who were telling me they were voting democrat. Malinowski signs were lining Route 513 and all over farm country (on lawns, not just the roadside), but that's just all anecdotal evidence. This is a big deal. It must have been pretty cool to be there for the win!

(297,154 posts)Yeah, Rohrabacher was in there 30 years, too.
Sharice Davids has gingrich's old seat.. must blow their minds.
I'm guessing you don't want to say who the Dem is who won your District?

(2,419 posts)It was Tom Malinowski defeating Lance. I lived in Freylinghuysen's district forever and just when it was starting to trend a little blue, I got shuffled into an even more solidly republican district. The dividing line is actually in my backyard. I figured at least I would be able to see a democratic district because we just knew Rodney was going down. But...things have a funny way of working out.

Yes they do have a funny way of working out sometimes.

(2,419 posts)Mikie Sherrill is going to play well with NJ voters in the long run. I think she's in that seat for as long as she wants. I think that six years from now she can take Menendez' place in the senate.

(2,419 posts)those Ocean County towns are probably doing some serious soul searching right now. All of the "refugees" who fled Essex & Bergen counties and the denizens of all of those Leisure Village retirement communities are wondering where they can go next to escape the democratic plague that keeps following them!

(18,470 posts)Abby Finkenauer knocked off Rod Blum here in Iowa Tuesday. It will be so nice to have actual representation in Congress again instead of another Trump boot licker like we had.

(2,419 posts)doesn't it? I never thought I'd see the day. But then again, I never thought I'd see the day when Trump was elected President.

(44,576 posts)NEVER forget that he was NOT elected by a MAJORITY of the voters.

(1,765 posts)I am jealous unfortunately my gerrymandered district still stayed red although we got super close to flipping and my city all turned blue! So we are a darker shade of blue which is awesome.
