Is this a good thing - Romney replacing Orrin Hatch?

Like comparing a bite from a rattlesnake to a bite from a cobra - On the grand scale of things, I suppose this is somewhat good. Utah will never, in my lifetime, elect a Democrat, so I suppose this is somewhat better.

The only thing that he is going to do is give disapproving soundbites and then vote with the crazies.

Romney, as right as he is, is far more moderate than Hatch, especially in the last decade.

Hatch is/was president pro tempore of the Senate, and thus in the line of presidential succession. I don’t know who the next one will be — Leahy?

On edit: looks like it will be a Repub. Darn.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_pro_tempore_of_the_United_States_Senate

i resent having to choose, but hatch is vile and partisan and slimey with no redeeming traits at all.

rmoney, at least, is not hatch.

11. My concern is the media will push the narrative that he's a "moderate," which is insane.

But he will not be a batshit crazy two faced partisan like Hatch became. Mitt wants a legacy seat he can pass onto his heirs.

He'll talk a great game, but he'll fall in line every single time.

Mitt is not a good guy. He let Trump endorse him in 2012 and didn't reject it. This was after Trump started his racist birther shit against Obama. I have not forgotten this. Fuck Mitt.

it's worth remembering that Romney is also in line to eventually become the LDS president, which in Mormonism is considered to be the type of that hierarchy, and as such, expect him to hew fairly closely to what best promotes Mormon interests as a senator. The Mormons are evangelical, but not to the extremes of the fundamentalists, and the more urban Mormons in general are relatively "moderate".

Also, Trump was significantly weakened by this election, and he did not make a lot of allies even on the Republican side. I suspect that this is going to create a growing chasm between those Republicans that tended to align with McCain and the Trumpians.

Finally, I don't think Romney has abandoned his own presidential ambitions, and appearing as a Trump lapdog will not do him any favors in 2020 if he does run. Romney will still be an asshole (McCain was an asshole) but I think he'll try to be a voice of "moderation" in the Senate.
