Mail-in ballots just flipped another race to the Democrats!

Holy mackerel. The NJ 3rd District was sitting with 1% of the precincts still out until this afternoon. That didn't mean 1% of the votes, it just meant they hadn't counted the mail-ins in Burlington County yet. Andy Kim went from being down to that (I'll be polite and delete the word I had originally put here) Tom MacArthur by 2,000 votes to being 3,000 votes in the lead! That means that just one of NJ's 12 congressional districts remain in Republican hands. That's Chris Smith who has held the seat since the Abscam scandal took out the guy who had it before him. This was a seriously republican district full of retirement communities, ultra-conservative orthodox Jews, military bases and some redneck areas of the Pinelands. 4 flipped seats in the state. Wow!

He had gotten so cocky that was eventually ostracized and resigned his co-chair of their moderate caucus, and went it alone with his bullshit amendment to the ACA "replacement", bowing down to the teabaggers -

Much of the public pushback from fellow moderates was over concern the amendment MacArthur crafted would alter one of Obamacare’s most popular provisions: a prohibition on charging higher rates for people with pre-existing conditions. Other members said the amendment failed to address their main concern regarding the rollback of federal funds for Medicaid expansion included in the original bill.

<...>

“Advancing careless and irresponsible legislation that has zero chance of passage in the Senate is neither governing nor compromise; it’s political suicide and completely tone deaf,” said one member of the Tuesday Group who was enraged by MacArthur’s claims that some in the group cared about politics more than governing. "Compromising means advancing policies that actually gets signed into law, something Congressman McArthur clearly doesn’t understand.”

MacArthur, a two-term congressman whose district includes parts of Ocean and Burlington counties, has served as co-chair of the Tuesday Group for less than five months, alongside Reps. Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania and Elise Stefanik of New York.

It was largely because of MacArthur that the replacement bill for Obamacare, also known as the Affordable Care Act, was revived. After Ryan pulled an earlier version of the American Health Care Act because of a lack of support, the amendment MacArthur negotiated with Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina, the chairman of the Freedom Caucus, garnered enough support to pass the House.

Mike DeWine and Husted are the apparent winners. Not a done deal.

Husted filed so many Law Suits in the last election.lost everyone. Fired two local Officials, one I know. They won their jobs back, but refused to work for Husted.

The one is now on my small city Council, his wife is on the County council. It is now all Democratic women. Our new Mayor is a Democrat.

While much of Ohio is still having serious problems our area is booming like crazy. Dayton also has a Democratic Mayor. She has performed miracles in a city that lost 5 GM plants under Bush

when the steel plants closed decades ago and the metro area was in collapse trying to find some sort of transitional industry. They eventually were able to become a medical research hub thanks to Pitt (and their UPMC) and Carnegie-Mellon.

Seems OH has lost its way but I think it will regroup. One thing that I always chuckle about is that for its size, OH probably has more "well known" cities than almost every other state!

but yeah, go up and down I-75 and the metro area is slowly filling in (at least once they finally finished all the damn construction on I-75)

My sister and her hubby (he was born & raised there and both used to work there before moving back here) go there a couple times a year to visit his mom and sister and nieces/nephews and I always laugh about how they always managed to pick the wrong time to go when some storm (hurricane remnants or snow) always seems to hit while they are on the road (they drive from outside of Philly).

And regarding that term "Rust Belt" - I have said for years that all you need to do is scrape off that rust and you will find shiny new steel underneath, with a strong foundation that you don't see built much anymore. And that rust removal has been accelerating rapidly.

Blue voters seem to be notorious for mailing in ballots last minute. Republicans get theirs in early. In one special election earlier this year, the democrat reduced a republican's 4000 vote advantage to 700 votes with just 6400 mailin ballots. It has been reported that there maybe around 700,000-800,000 million uncounted mailin ballots in the Arizona race, Sinema is down by ~16,000 votes.

vote and my other son who is a righty voted for Kim because he had a cancer scare this summer. He is 22 years old and is fine but I told him he now has a pre-existing condition. It scared the republican right out of him and he voted for Kim. I learned about Kim winning on DU sitting around the table with all my kids celebrating my youngest daughters 20 birthday. I was so proud walking into the precinct to vote with all my kids. Last time we did this was my youngest daughters first time voting and I told her she is voting for the first woman president. Great job NJ 3rd. There were tons of Kim signs, twice I had people canvassing for Kim at my door, I got about 15 text messages. That is how you get out the vote. This district is very red but the pre-existing condition motivated us to kick MacArthur out.

I went to bed and woke up thinking Kim had lost. Burlco went heavy Dem. even Moorestown and Evesham flipped. When I checked DU tonight saw that Kim won. It felt great with all the kids home celebrating my daughters birthday. I think Dems only held this seat once in last 100 years, John Adler was the last who died suddenly. Anyway it was a great win. A lot effort put forth by a lot of people. It was great to see.

You all are LONG overdue to go purple/blue. The area (including Cherry Hill, etc) was always old-school GOP, has been for decades and stayed that way even when the 'burbs here on the other side of the river N & W of Philly finally started to break. I am guessing because over the past decade, the GOP has suddenly gone so extreme that a breaking point was finally reached for some. The Tom Kean Republican seems to have gone extinct - especially when you have that type decide to drink the koolaid and start acting loon.

When it happened, I felt like I had when Comey revived the email investigation 10 days before the election. It was a punch in the gut. Of all the reps it was my rep who did this. What does he care, I understand MacArthur is worth about 35 million. To people who don’t understand Obamacare, I refer them to shows like Breaking Bad which was premised on a high school
Chemistry teacher who maxed out his healthcare benefits fighting cancer. Walt resorted to manufacturing and selling crystal meth to pay for treatment. People generally understand that. Dems have to stay on message. Preserve, protect and expand Obamacare and Medicare. Use scare tactics like R’a do with crime and immigration to mobilize. Rs will take away your Medicare and healthcare. Beat these bastards.
