BREAKING: PROTESTS CALLED FOR THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 5 PM LOCAL TIME
Donald Trump has installed a crony to oversee the special counsel's Trump-Russia investigation, crossing a red line set to protect the investigation. By replacing Rod Rosenstein with just-named Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker as special counsel Robert Mueller's boss on the investigation, Trump has undercut the independence of the investigation. Whitaker has publicly outlined strategies to stifle the investigation and cannot be allowed to remain in charge of it. The Nobody Is Above the Law network demands that Whitaker immediately commit not to assume supervision of the investigation. Our hundreds of response events are being launched to demonstrate the public demand for action to correct this injustice. We will update this page as the situation develops.

(1,826 posts)Update:
The Justice Department says acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker will immediately take over supervising special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation from Rod Rosenstein, the embattled deputy attorney general.

(58,785 posts)We are said to be at the break-glass moment, and that's before the conflagration gets out of control.
We've emailed and tweeted our senators and are waiting for relatives to decide how we're getting to the city.

(22,911 posts)Anyone who believes that firing Mueller would warrant immediate nationwide protests should understand that this is Trump's attempt to achieve the same end in a slightly more subtle way, designed to avoid triggering off nationwide protests. Trump just hand picked a loyalist lackey, breaking Justice Department appointment rules, to oversee the Special Counsel for the sole reason of undermining Mueller's work in any of a dozen ways. We can't be so gullible as to accept "oh, he didn't actually fire Mueller" and thereby allow Trump to manipulate us into passivity now.
And beyond that it is past any point of debating. I for one agree that this should be the trip wire for our protests, but the call has been made regardless. Either we mobilize in response or we look like a paper tiger.
I will be there

(94,333 posts)He's still Deputy Attorney General. The only change is that he's no longer overseeing Mueller. If the new guy abuses his authority and interferes with the investigation, THEN you can protes.

(33,643 posts)The question for me is ... IS HE FIRED from overseeing Mueller?
Personally I don't think the protests should be held until it's formally confirmed that he has been removed from that job.
Is it formally announced yet? Asking because I honestly don't know.

And although those instructions are both ineffectual and without consequence, it yet still puts the warmth of a small Bic lighter in my heart.

(51,567 posts)I just went through all of my signs from the 21 events I have attended as an activist and patriot. When you look at them it is like a "greatest/worst" review of all the issues he has created since not being elected.
They go back to Nov 2016...my first official protest that I attended less than a week after he wasn't elected.
Climate change, immigrants, guns, impeachment, Kavanaugh, the Tax Plan, the ACA being dismantled, women's rights, Russia and special investigation, etc. I am exhausted!

(12,368 posts)I cant drive in the dark because of eye surgery, and the time change puts the event past sunset. A bit too far to pay for cab, but there should be others going from my area. Waiting for a response.
I wonder if other seniors who might otherwise attend have the same night vision driving problems? But a noon protest would be difficult for ppl who work days.

(51,567 posts)I am leaving my little dog at home, she would get crushed and be miserable. I took her to my first protest in Nov 2016 10 days after the election. She pooped out pretty quickly so I leave her at home for her safety. I have been to over 20 events and when I see other dogs they look hot and miserable or their owners choose to carry them the rest of the way.

trump despised Sessions for recusing from Russian investigation, considered him "not loyal"
trump appt. Whittaker who has made known his disdain for Mueller investigation
trump has put Whittaker in charge of Mueller investigation
