ICYMI: Mitch McConnell admits that Clinton impeachment was mere "harassment".

Buried deep under the flurry of news yesterday, Senator Mitch McConnell made this startling admission:

"The whole issue of presidential harassment is interesting. I remember when we tried it in the late '90s. We impeached President Clinton. His numbers went up and ours went down and we underperformed in the next election."

It's fascinating what accidental candor may reveal, eh?

Which is why the Senate not only failed to convict, but couldn't even garner a majority vote on any of the charges.

The difference in 2018, though, is that it appears Donald J. Trump has indeed committed some crimes. We know that Republicans value party over country, and don't give a damn about the Constitution. For them, government is a vehicle for personal enrichment, not a mechanism for improving the lives of citizens. Republicans have been very good at selling that notion, so much so that a lot of citizens don't think the government is capable of doing anything, and with Republicans in charge, they're correct.

... despise and have no respect for government. So of course these are the people you should vote for to run your government. WTF? Dumbest shit I’ve ever heard of.

"His numbers went up and ours went down and we underperformed in the next election."

Trump's numbers are as high as they will ever go. Except for a few skittish independents in the middle, voters' minds are already made up and will not change: you either love Trump or detest him.

Should Mueller decline to pursue any further indictments, the Dems will not be convinced that Trump is innocent - they all KNOW he is a sleazebag just a whisker shy of being an outright criminal. His numbers will never improve, period.

However, should Mueller (or the HJC) find concrete evidence of serious wrong-doing in any sphere, then a good number of Republicans will finally abandon him.

This is exactly what happened with Nixon. His base stood by him to the bitter end. When finally shown incontrovertible proof of his criminality, they slunk away angry and embarrassed.

Clinton was innocent of virtually everything he had been accused of (sleazy shenanigans aside.) His numbers went up because a substantial number of Americans understood all too clearly that it was harassment.

Trump's numbers will eventually crater if there are any more indictments higher up the food chain. This is not harassment - it's called oversight.
