The date is 11/9/18 and it took this long for ANY state in the U.S.A. to vote Native American Women into Congress. Who knows the actual history about interaction between Native Americans and European invaders?New Mexico was the last state to grant full suffrage to Native Americans. On Tuesday, it elected one of America's first Indigenous congresswomen.

First Native American women: Democrat Sharice Davids won the House seat from Kansas' 3rd District, unseating incumbent Republican Kevin Yoder, and Democrat Deb Haaland won the seat in an open race in New Mexico's 1st District. That makes both of them the first Native American women elected to Congress.
A former MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fighter is going to Capitol Hill.

Davids, 38, will join Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma as former mixed martial arts fighters serving in the United States House of Representatives. Davids, a Democrat, will also be one of the first Native American women elected to Congress and the first-ever openly gay Native American woman elected to Congress. She was a long underdog early in the race in a state that votes mostly Republican.

(15,235 posts)There are a lot of Navajo and Pueblo people here, who do not vote, in city, state or national elections. I believe that every large reservation, should be allowed to send a delegate to the House of Representatives.

(15,235 posts)I was taking anthropology in college before I learned scalping (not illegal football ticket sales) was done by settlers and killers, not Native Americans, to collect a bounty on ANY indigenous people, especially unarmed men, women and children, to prove they had slaughtered them. Often, to save ammunition, Native Americans were scalped, while they were still alive.

(29,067 posts)but after that, it actually should not be hard to find.
As to scalping, my understanding is that it was started by the French during the French and Indian War

(15,235 posts)Of course, Hollywood cleaned up the image of poor settlers - on Native American Holy-Land - were scalped by savages. What would you do if a Native American family settled in your back-yard, without your permission? Native Americans first asked some of them to leave and instead more settlers invaded their territory.

(19,193 posts)That woman is a force to be reckoned with! What a fighter (literally and figuratively). Even better, she can kick any man's ass up and down the aisles, should it come to that. I was very impressed!
All of our Democratic women deserve HUGE props for their grit, determination, and sense of civic duty. I'm so proud to call myself a Democrat!

(19,193 posts)said how much of a fighter she is, and how beholding she is to the people she's been surrounded with in her life. There's no doubt that she's a super intelligent woman, and very wise as well. She's a great woman, and I expect BIG things from her in Congress, and perhaps even loftier goals.
